Aston Villa host Tottenham Hotspur at Villa Park on Tuesday 24th September 2013 (KO 19:45) in the third round of 2013-14 Football League (Capital One) Cup.

Villa beat Rotherham United 3-0 at home in the second round with goals from Andreas Weimann, Christian Benteke and Fabian Delph, while Spurs had a bye due to European commitments. This is the first domestic cup tie contested between Villa and Spurs in 19 years.

The match at will be the 165th time the two teams have met. Tottenham Hotspur first played Aston Villa on 11th April 1896 when Spurs were still in the Southern League. The friendly match played at Tottenham Marshes ended with a 3-1 win for Aston Villa. Three more friendlies were played until the clubs met in anger for the first time in the old Third Round of the FA Cup (today's 5th Round) in March 1903 with Villa winning 3-2.

The first Football League meeting came on 20th November 1909 in the First Division after Spurs had been promoted after their first season of League football. Villa once again won 3-2.

There have been two Wembley matches played between the two clubs. The first was in the 1971 Football League Cup Final which Spurs won 2-0 with two goals from Martin Chivers - Aston Villa were in the Third Division at the time.

The second game at Wembley came in the 1981 Charity Shield with FA Cup Winners Spurs drawing 2-2 with Football League Champions Aston Villa. Mark Falco scored both Spurs goals and Peter Withe did likewise for Villa.

The last time the two clubs met in a domestic cup tie was in the 5th Round of the League Cup in January 1994 with Villa winning 2-1.

Both Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur were founder-members of the Premier League in 1992-93 and the two clubs, along with Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool and Manchester United are among the only seven ever-present clubs during the competition's 21 season history.

Spurs did the 'double' over Villa in 2010-11 winning both matches 2-1 with Rafael van der Vaart scoring all of Tottenham's four goals. Villa's two goals both came from Marc Albrighton at White Hart Lane in October and Villa Park in December, after Spurs had been reduced to ten men after Jermain Defoe's red card after 27 minutes.

Spurs signed former Villa goalkeeper Brad Friedel during the summer of 2011 on a free transfer. Alan Hutton made a move in the opposite direction and Jermaine Jenas joined Villa on a season's loan.

The 2011-12 at White Hart Lane last season took place on Monday 21st November and resulted in a 2-0 win for Tottenham. Two first half goals from Emmanuel Adebayor after 14 and 40 minutes were enough to see Spurs take all three points in a game marked by Harry Redknapp's return after undergoing minor heart surgery. In January 2012 former Spurs striker Robbie Keane had a loan spell with Aston Villa scoring 3 times in 7 appearances. The match at Villa Park in April 2012 finished 1-1 with Ciaran Clark putting Villa ahead with a 25-yard shot that deflected off William Gallas and Emmanuel Adebayor scoring a 62nd minute penalty to level the proceedings.

This fixture at White Hart Lane in October 2012 resulted in a 2-0 win for Spurs. After a goalless first half, Steven Caulker put Spurs ahead after 58 minutes when he deflected-in Jermain Defoe's close range shot and Aaron Lennon added a second in the 67th minute with
a powerful shot into the far corner of the net.

Villa were in a very generous mood when they hosted Spurs on Boxing Day 2012 with Spurs coming away with all three points after a 4-0 win. Jermain Defoe opened the scoring and Gareth Bale added a hat-trick.

Tuesday's game at Villa Park will be the 165th match played between the two clubs and Spurs have the edge with 66 wins to Villa's 59 with 39 matches having been drawn.

Everyone's had a bit of Wayne Routledge!

Villa have a very good record in this competition, but they don't have a big enough squad to compete this time. Comfortable Spurs win, I think.

I assume the core of the outfield for the starting XI will be :

    Naughton - Vlad - Fryers
    Holtby - Lamela
    Defoe

Sandro fit enough for 90 mins of PL tempo ??

Considering our fixture pile up, the starting line up should be:

    Friedel
Naughton - Chiriches - Kaboul (if fit) - Fryers
Townsend - Sandro (if fit) - Dembele - Holtby
    Lamela
    Defoe

Give Brad some well earned GK time. We can give Vlad his debut and see how he fairs against a resurgent Villa, not to mention Younes some much needed game time, if he's fit to play. Fryers is yet to play so an ideal opportunity to review. The beast needs game time to find his fitness and could help protect this experimental back line. Holtby and Lamela had some good link up play against Cardiff so well worth developing that understanding. Would like to see how Lamela fairs more centrally behind Defoe. If they can gel, could be a great option for the Prem games further down the track.

Generally agree with those players but I'd probably go with Holtby as no.10 and Lamela and Townsend interchanging flanks.

Maybe even a case for Kane to start alongside JD in a 442, and give Townsend/Dembele a rest.

If he can take it I would play Townsend and save Lamela for the PL. Perhap use him as sub.

    Brad
    Naughton vlad kaboul fryers
    Townsend Sandro Dawkins
    Holtby
    Defoe Kane

If, and its a big if with that team, we are in a strong position then I'd like to see Defoe, holtby and Townsend withdrawn to be used as subs the match after

It'll be interesting to see the lineup. AVB's basically ruled out playing anyone who started yesterday but I'd like to see Soldado and Townsend play again. Soldado in part because he could do with a goal but also because Defoe's out and I'd like us to actually get to the next round for a change. Kane would be a gamble. Townsend could just do with more minutes and I'd like to see how he does on the left as we've been a bit weak there so far. I'm guessing one of Dembele and Paulinho will have to start too, unless we're going to give an under 21 midfielder a game.

Aston villa are a good side this season who have just had a very tough run of fixtures.

We will need to put out a strong team to get a result.

They'll probably need to rest a few, and isn't Benteke injured?

In an ideal world, Adebayor is working 150% on his fitness to rally to the Spurs
cause and try and give us 30 mins of a performance akin to the Chelsky game last April ...

I thought AVB said Defoe had a thigh strain or something and was having a scan today.
If so he is unlikely to play anyway if he's not fully fit, it may have to be Kane or Rob up front.

Lamela's been a sub all season and hardly had a kick since joining! He needs minutes and after seeing the way he changed our fortunes yesterday, let's give him some game time. If he shines, he could easily play Chelsea at the weekend as well, having not been used much. As for Townsend; he's starting to become predictably irritating with his runs and wild shots. Good chance for Lamela to get some match fitness and see how he gels with our team.

...and then you woke up and realised it was just a bad dream! ;)

I read it was a groin strain. Can't think how Defoe picked up of those up...

"and then you woke up and realised it was just a bad dream!"

A player who is committed to the squad cause will do the utmost to
get playing again ASAP to help his team mates. A player who is not ...
might (if they're lucky) get a loan to a previous manager, before the
current manager has them in the starting XI for 3 Europa Cup away ties.

I really don't think Villa can afford to put out an entire first team for this, wheras the team we can put out is very handy. for me:

    ---------------Friedal--------------

    Naughton ----Kaboul---Vlad---Fryers

Lamela----Sandro----Youth teamer at Cm and Left wing

    --------------Holtby----------------

    ---------------Kane-----------------

This will leave a near full team for Chelski

    ---------------Lloris------------------

    Walker ---daws---Verts----Rose (?)

    Townsend ---Dembele--Paulinho--Gylfi

    ----------------C.Eriki----------------

    -----------------Bobby--------------

Naughton doesn't really deserve to be in either team, but may actually end up in both!

I don't know the reserves well enough to suggest a cm or winger, but i've seen Dawkins mentioned - all i've ever heard is that no one knows why he is still with us! so i didn't go for him.

Shame there is no Livermore, Carrol or Pritchard.

Anyone know if C or P are getting game time?

Would be good to give Lamela 90 mins and if he impresses start him on Saturday, he hasn't had much football yet so that's plenty of time to recover
