Villa come into the game in 15th place in the table on 37 points after their 0-0 draw at West Bromwich Albion, while Spurs are in 4th place with 65 points after their 4-1 away win at Bolton Wanderers. The match at will be the 162nd time the two teams have met. Tottenham Hotspur first met Aston Villa on 11th April 1896 when Spurs were still in the Southern League. The friendly match played at Tottenham Marshes ended with a 3-1 win for Aston Villa. Three more friendlies were played until the clubs met in anger for the first time in the old Third Round of the FA Cup (today's 5th Round) in March 1903 with Villa winning 3-2. The first Football League meeting came on 20th November 1909 in the First Division after Spurs had been promoted after their first season of League football. Villa once again won 3-2. There have been two Wembley matches played between the two clubs. The first was in the 1971 Football League Cup Final which Spurs won 2-0 with two goals from Martin Chivers - Aston Villa were in the Third Division at the time. The second game at Wembley came in the 1981 Charity Shield with FA Cup Winners Spurs drawing 2-2 with Football League Champions Aston Villa. Mark Falco scored both Spurs goals and Peter Withe did likewise for Villa. There have been no Domestic Cup meetings between the two teams during the last 16 years. The last time they met was in the 5th Round of the League Cup in January 1994 with Villa winning 2-1. Both Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur were founder-members of the Premier League in 1992-93 and the two clubs, along with Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool and Manchester United are among the only seven ever-present clubs during the competition's 20 season history. Last season, Spurs did the 'double' over Villa winning both matches 2-1 with Rafael van der Vaart scoring all of Tottenham's four goals. Villa's two goals both came from Marc Albrighton at White Hart Lane in October and Villa Park in December, after Spurs had been reduced to ten men after Jermain Defoe's red card after 27 minutes. Spurs signed former Villa goalkeeper Brad Friedel during the summer on a free transfer. Alan Hutton made a move in the opposite direction and Jermaine Jenas joined Villa on a season's loan. The reverse fixture at White Hart Lane earlier this season took place on Monday 21st November and resulted in a 2-0 win for Tottenham. Two first half goals from Emmanuel Adebayor after 14 and 40 minutes were enough to see Spurs take all three points in a game marked by Harry Redknapp's return after undergoing minor heart surgery. Sunday's game at Villa Park will be the 162nd match played between the two clubs and Spurs have the edge with 64 wins to Villa's 59 with 38 matches having been drawn. please log in to view this image Full History of Tottenham Hotspur v Aston Villa Matches 1896-2012 please log in to view this image They Played for Spurs & Villa.... Incredible how close our Premier League record is. 1 win and 1 goal between us, hopefully we'll level that on Sunday.
It's interesting that most of the players who played for both clubs come from the post war era. I am talking WW2 younger viewers.
Villa have been awful, negative and dour this season. Let's hope that they continue to be so and that we take advantage of it. Another van der Vaart double wouldn't go amiss. It'd almost be a shame to see one of the Premier League ever-presents go down, but they deserve it, in my opinion. McLeish has spectacularly mismanaged them and he could soon be the most hated man in the West Midlands. Someone pointed out the other day that there's an upcoming vacancy at West Brom, if he fancies going for the treble! Thanks again, 6061. Always appreciated.
I'd rather Villa went for it, like Bolton did last night. Realistically though Villa only need a point for survival and I think that's what they'll aim for on Sunday. It's too late for McLeish to save his and I don't think Lerner will want to pressure him into trying to get 6 points from their last 2 games at the risk of blowing it all and going down.
When we use the 4-4-1-1 I don't mind teams setting up negatively, as we have the tools to unlock stubborn defences, YV. I thought that Bolton set up to try to contain us in the first half and it failed fairly spectacularly, forcing them to come out and go for it, which worked for while. It left them very open to breaks though, which led to our second goal and the quick third basically killed them off. You're right about Villa's approach to the game. They'll stick with McLeish's ****e til the end, I think.
I would love Villa to go down, but can't see it. Just hope we win against them. We're not far short of Villa's Prem points overall total IIRC, a season or two out of the Prem for them and we'd overtake them. I hope we can play the same team again as last night. I still wonder what Harry will do when Parker is fit again.
Despite having very similar records, Spurs have had the upper hand in recent meetings with Villa. In fact, we've won four and drawn two of our last six meetings... please log in to view this image ...and here are Tottenham player's goal and assists for the season going into Sunday's match at Villa Park... please log in to view this image
Interesting stats, 6061. I think it shows some limitations in our squad. We need to bring in somebody that can do Defoe's job, but can also fill in for Adebayor (or his replacement) when he's not available, for a start. Not a surprise, really, but the numbers confirm it.
I didn't know things were so close between us. Villa were my tip along with Wigan and Wolves to go down this season but I think they will escape. Ffs let's hope we score first.
Three Villa players have been involved in a punch up outside of a nightclub, on Monday night/Tuesday morning. Collins, Delph and Herd were the ones involved. Stupid.
