So, after about 3 months of a “mid-season break” strategically timed for teams such as Newcastle and Everton to completely rebuild their team with vast amounts of dosh from dodgy owners and those missing loads of players due to AFCON, we’re back and running! And, as luck would have it, we get to play our first game on a Wednesday night at the “Tottenham Hotspur Stadium”. Rumours that the club had asked fans to come up with a name for it after they moved from White Hart Lane in 2019 and this was the best they could come up with are, quite possibly, true. Though “The No Silverware For Years” was, apparently, a close second. As Covid rules have been changed, there’s little chance of any clubs now taking advantage of the dodgy FA deal of “We can only put out 8 first team players and 2 goalies due to injuries, suspensions, AFCON … oh and the tea lady called in with Covid ……” actually getting away with it ….. unless they’re Newcastle, Liverpool or one of the “Big” teams …… Talking of “Big” Teams …… poor old Hotspuds like to think of themselves as one. Something which, somehow, has never quite transpired since the days of Danny Blanchflower. Their fans don’t even have their own team song, having to steal our very own beloved “When the Saints Go Marching In” and, really cleverly (in almost poet laureate style), changing the 3rd word to “Spurs” ….. goodness, that must have taken some working out. On to the game - Wednesday Feb. 9. 19.45 on BTSport. Ref : David Coote Assistants : Harry Lennard / Nick Hopkin Fourth Official : Graham Scott VAR : John Brooks Asst. VAR : Lee Betts Now the last time we won a league game away at Spuds was the 7th May, 2016, when lightning struck twice with super scorer Steven Davis scored a brace - bet you could have got decent odds on that! Of course, when we played this bunch at St Mary’s, we suffered from seeing Salisu get his marching orders, but a superb rearguard action by our 10 men (and for once VAR went our way) to hold one for a 1-1 draw. As usual, with the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium holding 62,580, there are plenty of places to hide the snipers and, I’m sure, we’ll be treated to the likes of Kane, Son and Winks (plus you can name any number of white shirted players) going down like a ton of bricks the minute anyone breathes near them, so I’m hoping Mr Coote is going to be vigilant and that none of the Saints players dive in recklessly …… A performance like our last Premier League game, please, Ralph. It’s always nice to hear the Spuds fans moaning about how they “never get any breaks” and that “Harry is the greatest player in the world” (which begs the question as to why the doesn’t go and play for a team who actually can win trophies ….. Oh yes - and “Reverse the Mechanism” - you can tell I’m not used to doing these threads can’t you? And Up The Saints!!!!
Check out Spurs stadium on Google Maps, and you will see it identified as The Tottenham Hotspur Experience. Not sure I belong I this world anymore. I'll be there on Wednesday though, hoping for a better result than we had from The Arsenal Experience, back in December.
Dave - RTM has transferred across to the Cup now. We are back to a new mechanism now in the league. Just hoping it's an improved one.... ...or something like that.
Dave has most certainly succeeded in Reversing The Mechanism with this brilliant thread, Laces. We have two concurrent match threads running for consecutive matches, so who knows what will happen? The only way I can think of making this chaos wilder still would be to have two simultaneously stickied match threads. Shall I? Go on, shall I?
I wasn’t sure if having 2 match threads up at the same time was allowed, but, I thought “what the hell” and, given that I may be otherwise engaged this weekend, depending on the AOS dept at UHS (who may want me in there) I thought I’d seriously try to RTM big time in the chance that it might keep those divers on their feet and allow JWP to channel his inner Steven Davis with 2 cracking goals ……. You never know ….. let’s just say, though, I’m not expecting to do another match thread for a while after this …..
Ref : David Coote - Is he bald? What about his brother, Asa? (At least I've avoided cheese, quite Caerphilly, I think)
I'm going to this one. Hopefully will arrive a bit earlier than the last time I went when the traffic was so bad I barely made it for kick off.
This is my one guaranteed away day each season, as one of my Spurs supporting suppliers takes me every year. Forget all this "where were you when Keegan signed?" nonsence, I was there when Davis scored a brace!! Fear not, if we lose then i promise to make up for it with the food and drinks tab in the corporate area, and have a commiseratory pint for each and every one of you. 2-1 Saints. Broja winner. You heard it here first. COYR!!
Are you allowed to show any Saints leanings, before, during, or after the game? Can you run round the corporate area with your red and white shirt over your head, saying 'We are Southampton, we sing our own songs'. Just to test your suppliers' desire to do business with you.
Well it better bloody well work then. I wasn’t allowed to do the Chelsea Carabou cup thread, as I had lost a league match, yet was unbeaten in the cup. I hope Chilcs knows what he’s doing in changing the system.
Driving in London??? I think you can guarantee the traffic will be bad Walk? Bus? Train? Skateboard? Jet pack?
I sooooo want us to win this The Spuds have definitely become my most despised bunch of Premiership tossers for various reasons
Newcastle are a single issue hate I used to hate them because of Ashley and previously the Shepherds I now hate them because of their murderous owners and the fact that they've revealed that the EPL has NO limits to how low they will go when the money's right However, I generally get on well with Geordies and always found them pleasant to share a football game with They may act a bit entitled but they've had **** owners for a long time and probably should be one of the big 6 if local fanbase was the deciding factor Whereas any violence I've seen locally has been by Spurs North London Yobbos The St Marys away fan stewards hate having them here beecause they are NLY They've only got one song and its ours They act like billy big boots but never win anything Wy else do I hate them? What else you got?
