It's from Talksport so probably a load of rubbish but from what I've seen of this kid, he looks like he could be world class.

Tottenham are the latest side to express an interest in FC Basel star Xherdan Shaqiri.

talkSPORT recently revealed how Basel would have been prepared to sell the Switzerland starlet for as little as £5m but now they are holding out for a massive sum off the back of his impressive displays at the Under-21 European Championships.

A whole host of scouts were impressed by the 19-year-old midfielder at this summer's tournament as he helped Switzerland reached the final and, according to reports in Italy, Tottenham are keen.

Harry Redknapp faces a battle to keep hold of Luka Modric this summer and has been told he needs to sell before he can buy in the transfer market but his interest in Shaqiri appears to be concrete.

Basel are willing to cash in on the rising talent but only at the right price, with a fee in excess on £10m said to be the starting point for any potential auction that may ensue.

At least this is a signing who would deserve a first team spot, perhaps only on the bench at first but its a step in the right direction.

He reminds me of Van Der Vaart being left footed, skilful and even has a similiar build.

He's not the striker we want/need but definately a step in the right direction.

Reminds me more of Arjen Robben then VDV. Playing from the right and cutting in. Although that tactic will soon be found out if he moves here. All you have to do is make him go down the line instead of cutting in. Even Messi had to move to the middle. From what i have seen he is no Modric replacement. This guy will never play CM. Unless you are going to drop one of VDV,Bale or Lennon he will not get into your first team.

Believe it or not, Spurs need to do transfer business not related to a possible replacement for Modric <ok>

Errr no. He used to what Shaqiri does 2 years ago. Messi on the right,ETO'O in the middle and Henry on the left. But teams started to limit the amount of damage Messi could do by simply sending two men over to the right and making sure he does not cut in. But Messi being the genius he is went and played as a false 9. That is why he is an all time great. Shaqiri's main move will be found out in the prem. So it would be interesting to see what he does to develop his game.

    He's only 19.
I doubt his position is set in stone, yet.
Perhaps his best role might be in a similar position to how Robbie Keane played at his best, but mirrored or maybe in the hole?

Not sure how you can say that he reminds you of Arjen Robben, but that he'd be found out playing like that over here, SSN8.
Robben wasn't found out, though he appeared to age dramatically and Damien Duff still plays like that now, for Fulham.

He only reminds of me Robben in the sense that they both only have one thing on their minds. Cut in and shoot or pass. It really is one dimensional at times. Robben has more speed and is a better dribbler then Shaqiri. Therefore he can do it and get more end product with that tactic. I seen Shaqiri a lot now and he does the same thing over and over again. Without the world class dribbling Robben had he can't get away with it for as long as Robben did.

VDV in his Ajax days and at others clubs has shown he is a quality passer of the ball. He showed that by playing CM for Holland. So i can't see the Shaqiri/VDV comparison.

    He's 19, SSN8.
He's hardly going to be as good as Robben yet, is he?

Does anyone get the feeling that one tabloid nearly reported that Brad Friedel was a replacement for Modric?
(Also, I don't recall any papers saying Nasri was being signed because Fabregas was "obviously" leaving that summer...)

Most of the players we're linked to/have signed are clearly earmarked as ones for the future, but we need a few to come in and improve the first team. But, as that means getting rid of a few of them first, we need to stop being so hard-nosed about the fees for Bentley and Keane, or we'll have to rush around at the last minute orginising loan deals with the proviso they'll be signed permanently in January or soemthing.

You can. Robben even in his PSV days you can see was going to be a world class dribbler. And he did become one. Shaqiri just does not have the explosive burst that can take him past 2 or 3 players ala a 19 year old Robben or Messi. Shaqiri uses his body strength and super technical ability to beat a full back in order to cut in.

So why did you compare him with Robben, if you think he's a different kind of player?

    Is Ensil always this prickly?
    Er, yeah, pretty much! <laugh>
He doesn't have a lot of time for fans of other teams, to be honest.
With some of the idiots we get on here, I can't say that I blame him.
I think he posted that comment on the wrong thread, though.

Wouldn't this Shaqiri be bought as back-up and competition for Lennon, anyway?
Pretty much a replacement for Dos Santos/Bentley?

Can't see what Pique sees in her, myself.
Him and Ibrahimovic made a much nicer couple! <laugh>

Because they both do the same thing in a different way. Robben is the best at what Shaqiri is doing. He is the best because like i said he has the explosive pace and world class dribbling. Shaqiri can get away with his version of the Robben tactic in this Swiss league and under 21's but once he moves to a better league i can't see how he can do the same against better defenders and get away with it. Like i said he should move to the middle and imo he should do it soon. Even if he stays in the Swiss league he should be moved a more Ozil type role. That way its harder to try and make him use his right foot when he will have more space in the middle. Because that left foot of his is a wand. And the power of his shots are stunning. Anyway lets be honest he will probaly move to Real with all the other up and coming world class talents and be frozen out.
