It was to be a nervy start against our visitors, as the Gulls nearly opened the scoring within two minutes from the start of the match. Fortunately and to the relief of the home fans, the ball came off the post of the Gillingham goal after Gazza was beaten. However, from that moment on the first half belonged to the team in blue. As I could only watch from the far distance of the Medway Stand wondering time and time again how we were not leading from our attacks towards the Brian Moore Stand. Watching two instances where the Torquay keeper appeared to come out of his area to make clearances, with the game still 0-0 at the half time break, I was beginning to ponder our luck and what we need to do, to receive just reward for our efforts. The Gillingham goal keeper Paulo Gazzaniga, produced some superb kicks again throughout the game that seemed to find Tomlin with pinpoint accuracy for our counter attacks. Defender Simon King was to open the scoring for the Gills in the 51st minute with a bullet header after a flick on by Danny Kedwell from a Danny Jackman corner. It was a goal that had the Rainham End chanting ‘Simon King’ Clearly the defence lynchpin was King, who kept things organised at the back. Although Connor Essam was to be called up on against the big Torquay number nine Rene Howe after he had managed to turn Simon King, with Howe one on one with the keeper, young defender Essam proved he had the mental alertness and ability to put in a match saving tackle in the box to prevent the scores from being levelled and leaving Howe stunned that he had the ball snatched from his feet. King was credited with Man of the Match, while Essam and Tomlin who could also be argued for close contention. The Gills striker Gavin Tomlin just did not stop running and attacking the Torquay goal but also making his way back to support in defence. By the end he looked ready to drop after continuously running up and down the length of the pitch, with some shouts of his name from the Medway Stand to try to encourage him on for the final 5/10 minutes. Such was his spirit, that near the end when the Gills were coming under pressure, it appeared that Tomlin gesturing with his hands telling the players around him to clam it down. Danny Jackman occupying the left back position kept moving forward from defence in the second half, to take control. In the same way that Jack Evans has dominated down the right from the back. Curtis Weston forced a goal line save in the first half but was replaced by Charlie Lee in the 71st minute of the second half. While Lewis Montrose replaced Jo Kuffour and even had a couple of good efforts on goal from outside the box, they were always probably going wide but it was good to see the mentality to go for goal or ‘shoot’ as the chant would go up. But the final shot of the match fell to Danny Kedwell, when Tomlin was judged by the linesman to have been brought down in the box. Some confusion seemed to follow by the referee and eventually a red card was produced for a Torquay player but not the player that appeared to have brought Tomlin down? That is a matter for the referee and the Torquay manager, however, as far as I was concerned Keds wrapped up the match by powering the subsequent penalty in to the back of the net to make it 2-0 to the Gills. What a changed Gillingham side we have seen in the space of a week, not having conceded a goal for the last two games and beating a Torquay side that until last Saturday had been unbeaten for nine games with eight wins during that period. Did Gillingham meet Torquay at the right time or are we now looking at a young vibrant side capable of promotion, the story is to continue... With the big man Rene Howe up front, Barrett and the rest of the defence will have to put in another good performance. We may be top of the league but should take nothing for granted... Torquay 1 v 1 Gillingham (Howe, Weston)
I only got 2 points for getting that Weston and Joe Martin would score and that Burton would score one against us? Torquay 1-2 Gillingham (Howe; Whelpdale, Burton)
Torquay 1-2 Gillingham (Howe: Burton, Payne) I think 2-1 seems to be the going rate for this game, I would be shocked with a win by more than a goal.
