One of my all time favourite Musicals. Whenever I could get to London, my Saturday Night first stop would be Her Majesty's Theatre to get a 'cheap' standing room, ticket for Fidler. (I was in The RAF at time). I agree that the Film failed to capture the magic of the Stage, and this was particularly underlined where on as darkened stage, depicting a Sabbath eve, lights from the homes flickered on as the Sabbath hymn was sung. I saw that performance at least four times, and it never failed to lift me. I Also watched it when Topol brought the show to The Empire. He was by then about the right age for the part, and his own daughter was playing one of his stage daughters. ALL the magic was still there. I have a relatively short list of 'most memorable' stage performances. The top two men are Topol and Rex Harrison. RIP Sir and many thanks from a grateful and most appreciative Fan.
