[Awaiting the cricket & for once agreeing with Mr Hat - fed up of name change threads - thought I'd put together my top players of the last 50 years. Basically, only players I've seen & enjoyed watching, I think Hodges & Rocastle were loans? but no matter. I guess Waggy would be my number one though I also really liked Billy Askew for some reason. Any crucial omissions?B][/B] 1 Ashbee 2 Askew 3 Barmby 4 Brabin 5 Brady 6 Bremner 7 Brown L 8 Butler I 9 Chester 10 Chilton 11 Daniel 12 Edwards 13 Elliot 14 Giovanni 15 Greenwood R 16 Hodges G 17 Houghton 18 Huddleston 19 Jobson 20 Kaye 21 Koren 22 McClaren 23 McEwan 24 Marwood 25 Mutrie 26 Norman 27 Nisbet 28 Parker 29 Palin 30 Pearson S 31 Payton 32 Roberts G 33 Rocastle 34 Simpkin 35 Skipper 36 Turner 37 Waggy 38 Whitehurst 39 Windass and errm 40 Bullard purely as a footballer!
i'd have justin whittle in there. i thought hobbs was pretty good too. dawson? he helped the cause a fair bit. myhill wasn't bad.
I'd have Okocha on just because I think he's technically the most gifted player we ever had. I'd probably squeeze Whitmore onto mine too, but only because I was a massive fan at the time.
Depends on the logic behind the Top 40. If it was the Top 40 players you've enjoyed watching play, then Okocha would definitely be in there. He was also a vital player in our Promotion that Season which was a legend team due to it being the first time we'd been Promoted to the Premier League. His performance at West Brom away that Season where him and Fraizer Campbell ran the show which resulted in us winning 2-1 at a seemingly unstoppable side. He was amazing on the ball, and a pure joy to watch.
I'm not convinced he played that day, but happy to be proven wrong. I remember winning at Wolves and Burnsy and Swanny absolutely raving non-stop about Okocha who was playing CM alongside Ashbee. We rarely ever played him in that role again for some reason.
He did, I was there. He played the pass to Campbell that eventually led to Campbell's peacher in the top corner. West Bromich Albion vs Hull City 2007/08
I was at the WBA one too and I remember Campbell and Folan being excellent, didn't recall Jay-Jay playing but fair enough. Weird that Paul Robinson played against us too, he was playing for us only weeks before that.
How exciting was it when we signed Whitmore and Goodison though. I'll throw a few more names in the hat. Alex Dyer was always a bit of a favourite as a young 'un. Richard Peacock could be relied upon to supply a rare flash of excitement in some of our darkest days. Alan Fettis. In his first spell he was just ****ing awesome. Ray Parlour. Another player that was a cut above.
Parlour often appears on these lists, but personally, I was disappointed with him, I thought he'd be better.
I was a bit young to remember if e was actually any good or not, but I remember being absolutely gutted the morning my dad told me Roy Carroll had gone. I think I actually cried
