Rodney Marsh has been naming his top 3 players of all time at a range of clubs. For Saints he has gone for MLT, Channon and Ron Davies. No room for Terry Paine. Don't think you can argue too much? Views
Hasn't yet Lapras. Seems to be going through all top clubs but has only done a few so far. Will post if he ever get's to Pompey
Matty's an automatic choice, obviously, and Channon is a personal favourite. Ron Davies was a bit before my time, so I'd be dropping him in favour of Danny Wallace.
Rodney Marsh is spot on with his player selection as each of these players was a great servant of our club as well as each of them helping us to remain in the top division during their playing days. Some might want to include Keegan but he was here only for a short while.
Never saw Terry or Ron Davies. Personally and in my time watching Saints I would put Steve Williams right up there.

Ron Davies was absolutely brilliant with his head, but on the floor he was hopeless. Terry Paine made Ron Davies the player he was because of his ability to pass the ball to exactly the right place. Without Paine, Davies would not have been half the success he was. For me you have to have Paine over Davies. If the debate is about "servants to the club' then Paine would have to be no.1 given the number of games he played. Either way he has to be in the top 3. He played for England whilst Saints were in the second division. You have to be good to do that. You could make a case for Ball or Keegan but arguably neither were at their absolute best whilst at Saints. The other one mentioned above is Steve Williams who was without doubt a great player. However, I wouldn't include him because he left us at too young an age.
Can't make up my mind who the best 3 players are, IMO. Once you get to 3, there are quite a few contenders. It's easier to just pick one.
The one person that always gets overlooked in these type of debates is Peter Shilton, maybe because he is a GK. He was superb for us and is England's record cap holder and is widely regarded as the finest Keeper this country has produced. Other personal favourite players are LeGod and Steve Williams, but it's hard to leave out Micky Channon and Keegan.
although i lived in guernsey at time of MLT period and although he was withoutdoubt the most gifted to play for saints my 3 would be Terry Paine ,mister southampton my dad called him,Mick Channon my personal hero ,thought i was him when playing lol ,and maybe a surprise to some but Peter Shilton ,won most of his england caps at saints and had an immense impact on the side ,organising the defence,
I've only been a Portsmouth fan for a relatively short time, so a lot of our greatest players (e.g. Alan Knight) I didn't see play and can only really decide from our players who have played for us since around 2004. So I'd say David James, Pedro Mendes and Linvoy Primus!
I honestly don't remember Shilton being as good for us as he was for Forest. I always felt he was going through the motions somewhat. I'm not saying he was poor by any stretch of the imagination but I would tend to put Neimi above him (only based on both their performances for Saints, not total career).
