Newcastle are being linked with a move for Liverpool midfielder Jay Spearing after he impressed on loan at Bolton.

The Magpies are focused on earning enough points to stay in the Premier League but that is not stopping speculation over who boss Alan Pardew wants on board next season if they do beat the drop. Wigan midfielder James McCarthy has already been heavily linked with a move to St James' Park and now Liverpool's tough-tackling Spearing is also said to be a target. The 24-year-old has just one-year remaining on his contract at Anfield but he is not in the plans of Reds boss Brendan Rodgers, who shipped him out on loan to Bolton after taking over from Kenny Dalglish. Spearing has impressed on loan at the Reebok Stadium and the Trotters will no doubt be keen on a permanent move if they can win promotion back to the Premier League via the play-offs.

It seems that the club are after some proper English spirit to go with the foreign talent.

I was thinking that this sounds more like championship planning.

I accept we need some more fight in our team, but they do need to be good. Spearing has never really convinced me.

We have to accept that getting a core of youth team players (the majority local lads) to come through, is going to take a little bit of time. We need to get some better coaches and more advanced coaching methods at the younger levels. Hopefully this process is well under way. You can't just match the likes of Villa in terms of having local talent over night.

You could have done with a player like Jay last Saturday.
Honest, always running, knows his limits keenly.

Me and the Mrs met Ross in Dudley, nice guy and loves the North East in general. He is massive too, however this man made 145 lbs is beyond me. In person he looks a welterweight.
