Newcastle plot Sam Byram transfer and hope to take good look at Leeds starlet in Cup clash
    24 Sep 2013 22:30

The £8m-rated right-back also linked with Manchester City, Everton and West Brom could face the Magpies on Wednesday

Newcastle's Alan Pardew has joined the £8million chase for Leeds rising star Sam Byram.

The Magpies will go into battle over his signature with Premier League rivals Manchester City, Everton and West Brom when the January transfer window opens.

Toon boss Pardew is tracking Byram, 20, after the right-back’s return to action following a five-month lay-off with a nagging hip problem.

Newcastle were among a clutch of top flight clubs watching the Essex-born defender - who has racked-up 54 appearances and four goals since making his debut 13 months ago - in Leeds' 2-1 home defeat by Burnley on Saturday.

And Pardew is hoping to get a first-hand glimpse of the highly-rated youngster in Wednesday night’s Capital One Cup clash between his side and Brian McDermott’s Championship troops at St James’ Park.

The Geordies are famous for shopping in the French market for new signings, but Pardew is keen to recruit more English talent and has identified Byram as a top target.

He is short at right-back after Danny Simpson left at the end of his contract in the summer to join Championship side Queens Park Rangers.

Simpson’s departure left Mathieu Debuchy - signed from Lille for £5.5million last January - as Pardew's only experienced right-back

Would love it, my best mate's a Leeds fan and calls out most future prem standard players (delph, lennon, howson).
This is they guy he currently bangs on about. Think he would come at a price too high for us (at least 6 mill)

    Seems highly rated.
I would like some English players, but the way things stand can't see us coughing up the asking price in a bidding war if it comes to that.

But, you never know, Ashley might loosen the purse strings in the new year. <laugh>

If he's replacement for Debuchy, we can't afford to not sign him...

Not a chance in hell that we'll ever spend 8m on a 20 year old RB with no Premier League experience. Would love him though as it's exactly how Sir Bobby built his team, he bought young British players that would only get better and it works provided you have a mix of experience and youth.

Villa are trying it at the moment which is admirable, problem for them is that their entire team is built with young players, they need and old hear or two as well to get the blend right.

Jason Steele, Harry Maguire, Sam Byram, Aaron Cresswell, Will Hughes, Tom Ince, Jordan Rhodes.

The lack of British talent here is criminal. Give these guy's a chance.

Rate all of those players other than Maguire. He looks slow even in League one and just don't see him as a step up from Curtis Good.

Byram might not shine tonight he's only played 60 minutes this season after a injury so won't be on top form even if he plays.

fans player of the year 2013

players player of the year 2013

That would remain to be seen, he is better in the air than what we currently have, the alternative for me would be Craig Dawson.

So true. Sir Bobby pointed the way and we've just shelved a successful policy in favour of our current by cheap foreign talent, and wonder why its not really working when faced with adversity. We were even given a 2nd dose of the need for home talent under Hughton, yet still we haven't learnt. Our manager wants home talent, the vast majority of fans want home talent, any period of success here has always had home talent.................................its not fecking rocket science!

Definitely think Will Hughes will make the grade. Good passer, spots good runs and very industrious.

Paddy Kenny doesn't have the same rapport with the fans that he used to have. Was always good for a laugh at one time, but was very reserved last night.
