Newcastle are closely following Benfica forward Rodrigo Moreno Machado, according to Daily Express.

With star striker Demba Ba widely tipped to leave St James Park in January, boss Alan Pardew is desperate to sign a new centre forward in the winter.

English newspaper Daily Express understands that the Magpies are weighing up move for Benfica star Rodrigo.

The 21-year-old, who began his career at Real Madrid, already have some Premier League experience, having scored 1 goal in 17 league matches while on loan at Bolton during the 2010/2011 season.

His performances during the loan spell at Reebok Stadium helped the player establish himself as a first team regular at Estadio da Luz, and he did well to score 13 goals in 29 league games for the club.

Rodrigo has been particularly impressive on international level, netting 12 times in 10 matches for Spain Under-21 side.

It's kind of worrying that we would be putting so much effort into signing a new striker.

Other clubs are able to go through seasons with 1/2 strikers available. Why do we need 3 strikers?

Surely we can build systems around our currently strikers and by more attacking/flair players?

It's kind of worrying that we should need more than what we have. Maybe Cisse is one of those players that will go on a 15 game spree a season, and then be poor for the rest of it? Is he purely a form player? We all know he has class about him, his finishing abilities and abilities in general are excellent.

The only thing I can think of is that Ba is definitely off in January, that's the only real reason why we would need another striker so desperately.

Weren't you in the Boy Scouts Tash?

Personally I think having options upfront is important. Chelsea have 2 recognised strikers and neither of them are firing, they've been supported by Mata, Oscar and Hazard playing brilliantly and since that's faded matteo has lost his job. Liverpool have Suarez who is essentially carrying the team and they want more. Added to the fact Rodrigo is rated as quite promising would be nice to see him.

I would love another striker but there are more important priority's such as centre back where we only have 2 competent senior options.

Am I correct in thinking that Nigeria have qualified for the ACN? If so, we could be without Shola for a few weeks when we will have Europa matches, the FA Cup and Premier league games to play. If either Ba or Cisse were to get injured during this time it would leave us with ONE senior striker.

I realise that we need to strenghthen in other areas too, but I would definatley like to see another striker coming in.

I think it's just part of the normal club policy of finding targets for every position should one of our big guns up and leave in January.
I really hope Ba stays but my instinct is telling me otherwise.
