It never ceases to amaze me the lack of firm offers for our so-called squad players............Best/Loverman/Perch/Smith/Guthrie etc etc

Clearly no-one else thinks they would improve their own teams...........

Is this wages ( Smith/Barton/Xisco)............or simply we bought duds ( Perch/Guthrie0 or a bit of both..........

My view is we should look at their wages.........ship them out and get better pool players in.............

Read the other day Leeds might take Smith and chip in £15k of his £60k weekly wage!............big deal!!!!

you cant expect that these players will be sold straight away. they were here last season because we needed them because of a lack of strength in depth.

now i cant say all these guys will be sold because we arent going to get a lot of players in to replace each and every one. plus these guys are squad players and come in when needed, and lets face it, if we finished 12th as a newly promoted team, then they've done something right

all the new people on the board seem to have this idea that transfers will all be done in the opening 2 weeks of the window. zero patience and it makes the rest of us look like mugs to the rest of the country

Looking back, it's astonishing that we signed Alan Smith in 2007 for £6million on a 5 year contract at a reported £60,000 pw. By 2006, it was evident that he'd returned from a nasty long-term injury a much diminished player. So, on my calaculations, by the end of his contrat, he will have earned approximately £15million, and he will have cost the club in excess of £21 million, and he's certain to leave without a transfer fee being paid.

What have our returns been on this enormous investment? Well, he has scored no goals. Zilch. on top of that, he is one of the least creative players I've seen, while his timing in the tackle is very poor. He may be a jolly fine and popular presence in the dressing room, but, let's face it, he must go down as one of the most expensive flops in our history (though not in the same category as Michael Owen, whose in a league of his own here).

The shocking waste regarding Owen, but also Smith and others, has clearly had a huge impact on Ashley's transfer strategy. That seems unsurprising and sensible - though, sadly, many fans fail to recognise this. However, he appears to be going too far down the road signposted 'Miserly'. A balanced transfer policy is required. Will he achieve that? The jury is still out...

Smiths tackling was excellent until recently. At the moment he can't keep up with the game but a few years ago he was easily the best tackler I've ever seen

Your points valid though, it is massive waste of money

**** that!! If he doesn't spend the full £35M I'm burning down every Sports Direct in the land! We need to be outspending Man City because they must certainly have a plan to recoup all the money they're spending when the new UEFA rules come into affect.

I'm bored now with newbies turning up, slagging off transfers, Fat Mike, past failures, players on too big a salaries from a few years ago. We're all blatantly aware of the past mistakes and don't particularly need reminding over and over again. Yes we don't have as much money to spend as other clubs, yes we have to be more frugal but it's not like we're going to get relegated or anything <doh>
FFS will people chill out with the doom and gloom and wait and see what happens, the transfer window opened this morning for crying out loud.

    Rant over

    happy thoughts, happy thoughts aaawwuuuuuuuuummm

I wouldn't call Guthrie a dud, he's not a superstar but he's shown he can step in when needed and do a decent job. The problem is that clubs can find players of Smith/Perch quality on miniscule wages so there's no reason to pay over the odds to get them.

ps. Including Barton as 'deadwood'? Behave.

Hopefully Hughton will get Calderwood, then they'll buy Perch again to plug their many gaps from the relegation firesale with his versatility.

Personally, I want most our fringe players to go to Hughton as a thank you.

Smith, Guthrie, Xisco, Ranger, Perch and Lovenkrands (if we sign another two strikers) can all do a job in the Championship.

The bottom line is we don't have to squad size to let all our fringe players leave. The obvious drains on resources like xisco should go as they are clearly not in contention but players like gutherie and lovernkrands will still do a job for us next season because one thing is for sure. We will get injuries.

I don't think we're in a position to be letting fringe Players go. Smith and Xisco need to go as they're wages are far too high and they offer nothing in return. Players like Lovenkrands and Guthrie need to say as they've proven they've still got something to offer

Smiths wages are ridiculous! 60k per week and he adds nothing to the team and it pisses me off when i see/hear people claim "he's good for the dressing room". I would be good for the dressing room if i was earning 60k a week for **** all!

We need to try and ship: Perch,Smith,Xsico,Lovenkrands.

Lovenkrands seems like a cracking bloke but he's not whats needed if the club is serious about moving forward. But first we need to actually bring in strikers, so let's see where we stand in a month.

I honestly feel that Vuckic has just as much to offer as Smith does.

As others have said we can only really afford to lose Smith and Xisco because we don't have sufficient cover to get rid of them all at the moment.

But yes Smith and Xisco are going tobe difficult to get rid off because we have been paying them well above their worth so other teams are put off by that. The players also are presumably unwilling to take a pay cut as well and are happy to earn their money for doing nothing.

It is early in the window though so we can hope but I get the feeling we may still have both of them in September.

If it weren't for his crazy contract, I'd play Xisco ahead of Ranger. Seems to have good vision and rather than being a natural goalscorer looks like the sort of forward who can pick out a pass and get a few assists.

Is it true that we'd have to pay an extra fee after x number of games he plays?

I expect one of two of the deadwood to be shipped on the last day of the window.

How does Xisco have good vision ? He played one good pass to Amy which most people on here could have played. If you have legs of course..
