Mountain out of a molehill. The boy is 18, when was the last time Steaua were a well known side?

Exactly, the lad obviously meant no harm but was just being honest, if a bit naive which is hardly surprising - he'll, no doubt, learn about diplomacy from this though.

Yeah, seems like they pounce on any little thing footballers say these days. The content of Watt's comments are entirely innocuous.

That's probably why, in most cases, footballers' interviews are so bland - they're afraid to say anything which could be misconstrued or deliberately twisted in order to sensationalise it and stir things up.

Basically a journalist took Tony Watts comments out of context and Celtic shamelessly apoligised for his remarks...

I don't think there was anything 'shameless' about Celtic's apology. To try to explain would be seen as trying to justify the young lad's comments and thus would add more fuel for so-called 'journalists' to make even more mischief - easier all-round to just issue an apology and kill the 'story'.

The question (from the Romanian reporter - who will have had at least one gold tooth, for sure) seemed specifically formulated to cause (stupid, needless and needling, buy-me-a-headline) problems. A waste of everyone’s time.

His only hope was to respond with (something along the lines of): Well, I prefer to think that both teams should be delighted/honoured to play each other, and the similarities we share are amazing: historical national dominance and lucky one-off wins in the European Cup. It should be a great game, Gary.

(Or the Romanian equivalent of “Gary”.)

    Because……

If he’d simply answered “yes, too right”, he’d be in trouble for being an arrogant prick. “Ignorant Watt Pisses all over Steaua’s History and Tradition.”

He got into a version of this sort of trouble, anyway.

And if he’d simply said “no, not at all, quite the opposite”, he’d be in trouble for talking down Celtic’s chances. “Upstart Watt Disses Team Mates and Says They Should Be “Honoured” to Play European Also-Rans Bucharest.”

If you take away the illogicality of his remark – you don’t “prove” that you’re one of the “biggest” teams in the world simply by qualifying for the last 16 of the Champions League – he did alright, considering, and I’m a bit bewildered as to why Celtic felt the need to apologise.

And so, to recap: what a load of absolute ****e.

Isn't it funny how hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia is such a long word?

Is that a fear of being shagged off 13 Hippos at once?

EDIT: It would've been much funnier and cleverer to say "horses" instead of "hippos" wouldn't it?

Yes, it is a load of nonsense. As I have said though, Celtic's 'apology' simply kills the 'story' and I can see why that approach was taken - no point in feeding the golden-toothed 'Gary' any more fodder for headlines such as 'Celtic refuse to apologize for insulting our glorious Steaua’s ancient 65 year History and Tradition' ... or rather, 'Celtic refuză să-mi cer scuze pentru insultarea noastră glorioasă Steaua Istoricul antic ani 65 de ani și Tradiție'.
