Was listening to him, on the radio, talking on Talk5hite. He has a charity that's been running for 12 years, helping amateur and professional sportsmen and sportswomen deal with substance abuse and gambling additions. He was very matter-of-fact and open about the problems that he suffered with alcoholism, and made some very interesting observations about the kinds of addictions facing today's stars. I always rated him as a player and a captain, despite him playing for the enemy, and it is clear that Arsenal's defence is a mere shadow of what it was, when he was playing. I was left with the impression that he could have been an even better player, if he had not succumbed to the sauce.
Was fully expecting a troll thread. Hard to believe now that we once had 4 of the best defenders in the league all in the same team...
Are you including Dixon and Winterburn? Not sure either was top 4. Bould and Adams were a great pertnership, as was Adams and Keown. After that I forget who you had centrally .
Full backs that rampage forward were rarer back then, in terms of pure defending there were few better than Dixon and Winterburn. You know full well what master of the defensive arts we had centrally after that
The old Arsenal back four was not about individuals - it was a unit. And, a very well drilled and organised unit. To Wenger's credit, when he came, he realised that. He put Vieira and Petit in front of them, and well, we know the rest...I bet they wish they had that defence now!
He actually had to get a cab yesterday to reach the Talksport studios because he had put the wrong fuel in his car and had to abandon it . He's easier to listen to on the radio than he is on TV. Mainly because on radio you don't get to see that silly look he gives when he thinks he's said something funny. He was on Goals on Sunday very recently and he came over as a condescending prick, but yesterday on Talksport, he wasn't too bad.
I knew Tony from 9 years of age in junior Essex league football, his father Alex was a qualified coach and from U9 to U15 Tony was a refined clever and talented CB it was only when the gooners got their hands on him that they bulked him up and taught him how to boot the ball down the channels
