Of course they're overachieving, but they came 2nd in their WC group and did creditably in their playoff against the Croats, while Turkey came 4th in their group. So like I said, hardly a huge shock.
Not been following their respective fortunes too closely but I’d deem Iceland 3 Turkey 0 as a shock. Iceland are tricky at home and have some decent players, even though Turkey have dipped a bit lately, they’re still a world away from their status in the 1980s as whipping boys.
Iceland are a lot better than they used to be; the likes of Sigurdson, Gunnarsson, Finbogasson, Palsson and Sigthorson are genuine talents. It wouldn't surprise me if they finish at least second.
So how can such a small country produce all this talent. We England a country of over 60 million, one of the best leagues in the world, the FA and its new school / training center thing struggle to find 11 decent players. Someone suggested the other day we should get players like Adnan Januzaj to play for us. If a player lives in England for 5 years and can then claim British citizenship, is that how low we have sunk ?
