http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/news/latest-news/kop-icon-to-sell-medal-collection Can't imgaine footballers of today sruggling for money in years to come
He says he isn't struggling financially, if he can get some extra cash to invest in his family then fair play to him. Some things are more important than football and family are one of those things...like I he says...he has the memories and he is in the memories of those who watched him play.
Crawl back under your stone - you've just come on our board today and WUM'd like you're getting banned this afternoon. You have nothing of value to contribute and your bollocks about Tommy indicates you've not got the first idea what you're talking about. Jog on, there's a good Trollie! Before Luv or Ze catches you...
BBB, you only have yourself to blame for the reaction that you have received. As for this thread. I don't think its sad at all. Smithy says he's not broke and that he has made a concious decision in favour of his family. So fair play to the man.
Dave, you missed the wonderfull earlier post about Tommy '...should have to get a job like the rest of us." Sounds like the bitter who phoned the DSS over his disability claim...
in reality there are two things that could happen in the end anyway.... one his his heirs sell them or second they donate them to the museuem at anfield. for me this is a perfect opportunity for either a current player (gerrard and carrgher) or the club to make the purchase and put those medals in the museum... thus tommy will be able to go see them with the grandkids, the lub will honour him and he'll get the money. one weeks wages for mr gerrard you know!
Smithy was a legend for our club and if he makes a few bob for his family in his twilight years fair play to him. The sad part would be a private collector buying his medals & shirts.
"Liverpool legend Tommy Smith is selling off his medal collection to provide for his family. The auction will feature 75 items, including Smith's 1977 European Cup winners' medal, 1965 FA Cup winners' medal and match-worn shirt, and St Etienne striker Dominique Rochteau's shirt from the Reds' historic meeting with the French giants in 1977." Shame such a great player has fallen on hard times - probably be on £50k a week if he was of modern day generation!!
Coming from an Utd fan it disgusting to see legends at clubs having to sell treasured items to get by. Something similar happened to Tony Dunne the former Man utd and Irish player who sold his memorabilia to help his family.
Sad to see but family has to come first unfortunately, no club legend should have to sell any of there medals. Just goes to show how football has become moneyball since the start of the PL Thankfully he'll still have good memorys of his playing time at Liverpool
LFC buy Smith's memorabilia. It's great to see that the club was able to purchase some of Tommy's memorabilia. I'm sure Tommy is delighted that some of his memorabilia is in the museum for generations of fans to see.
Not selling because he needs the money. He says it makes sense since the medals are locked away in a bank and are never taken out, they are wasted were they are. He may as well have the money rather than the medals. His memories are worth more to him.
You'd have thought that the first act following his decision to sell would have been to contact the club. Strange that they went to auction IMO.
