I see from the Saints Web Forum that Tommy Mulgrew died recently. He was the inside left of the great forward line when I first went to the Dell in '58.. Paine, O'brien, Reeves, Mulgrew, Sydenham.. what a forward line. Tommy scored 100 goals for Saints.. not bad for perhaps the least remembered of the famous 5..
That's very sad. He never played at the highest level but certainly helped us get there. RIP Tommy Mulgrew.
A few seasons before my time, but always to be remembered. They still talked of him when the JCL [me] turned up.
I do remember him. That was the team that first switched me on to Saints rather than Pompey (despite all the efforts of an otherwise favourite uncle). I had no idea that we were scratching around in the 3rd Div South and cared even less. I just knew that they were exciting to watch and scored barrel loads of goals. Happy days.
Before my time unfortunately - I didn`t know he was from Motherwell, and he scored 15 seconds into his Saints debut. That Charlie Austin`s a bit of a slow-coach !. RIP Tommy.
I can remember watching Tommy in my early days as a Saints fan, not the most spectacular but always reliable R.I.P.
