Tom Carroll could be poised for a return to Tottenham after QPR were told they could not play the on-loan midfielder in this weekend's FA Cup third-round clash with Everton.

Spurs have an option to recall the England U21 star this month and a host of injuries in midfield to players such as Sandro, Paulinho and Gylfi Siggurdson have left new manager Tim Sherwood short of options.

Carroll would add another creative option for Sherwood in midfield if he returns to White Hart Lane as Spurs combine a bid for a place in the top four with the latter stages of the Europa League.

They face Arsenal in the FA Cup third round at the Emirates on Saturday evening.

Left-back Benoit Assou-Ekotto - QPR's other Spurs loanee - has been given permission to play at Goodison Park.

Spurs spent much of the first half of the season without a recognised left-back because of injury to Danny Rose, but his return to action alongside the promotion of Zeki Fryers under Sherwood means the Premier League club do not need the Cameroon international to return.

I don't think he'll be missed that much, has been less than imposing in a key area...

Not to bothered although he's a tidy player. Always available but needs to develop.

Im more happy about the fact it seems we have BAE for the rest of the season <ok>

He's a good player and very young just needs to get down the gym, bit too lightweight for this league

Hasn't really done it for us but I still think he'll become a very good player.

Good. Haven't been impressed at all with Carroll.

But great news if we get to keep BAE - he has been a good player for us.

Traore expects Assou-Ekotto to stay at QPR

    Armand Traore of QPR

    02/01/2014
    By Sean Gallagher

Armand Traore believes QPR will keep hold of Benoit Assou-Ekotto, meaning the former Arsenal man’s best chance of a run in the team could be on the left of midfield.

Rangers will have a void to fill at left-back should Tottenham take up the option of recalling Assou-Ekotto from his season-long loan at Loftus Road.

But Tim Sherwood has given them permission to select the Cameroon international in the FA Cup – an indication that the recently-appointed Spurs boss is not planning to take him back to White Hart Lane.

And Traore, recently praised by QPR manager Harry Redknapp for his attitude, does not expect Assou-Ekotto to make an early return to north London.

    Benoit Assou-Ekotto, QPR
Assou-Ekotto looks likely to stay at QPR.

He said: “I don’t think Benni is going back to Spurs this month.

“Harry doesn’t like to change the back four, and Benni is playing well, so there are not so many opportunities to play at left-back.

“I think Harry has always liked me playing left midfield because I played there for him at Portsmouth.

“Obviously it is very different to left-back as you get to go forward a lot more. I’m very attacking-minded as a player so I like playing left midfield of course, but I’ll play wherever the manager wants me.”

Traore also feels he may now be able to overcome his persistent injury problems.

The 24-year-old struggled to complete matches last season and has been out of favour this term, making only nine first-team appearances.

But he said: “I’m getting on top of that after someone in France told me where I was weak and the QPR physios also helped me. But I haven’t been playing that much so I don’t know how much I’ve improved.

“I now do a lot of core work. I have strong thighs, so I need to work on my glutes so there is a balance.”

I'd keep Carroll and even sign him. He'll become a good player. Needs to build strength.
