Wellington Phoenix will be without marquee striker Tomer Hemed for Sunday’s clash against A-League leaders Central Coast Mariners, while Wednesday’s game against Melbourne Victory has been postponed to February 24.

Hemed has been ruled out with a minor hamstring injury, which could also sideline the former Brighton and Hove Albion forward for the following game against Western Sydney Wanderers next Sunday.

The Phoenix were due to play the Mariners, Victory and the Wanderers within the space of just eight days.

However, the midweek fixture has been postponed by one week after the entire state of Victoria was plunged into a five-day lockdown at 11:59pm on Friday in an attempt to curtail the latest Covid-19 cluster.

Although he is yet to find the back of the net, the loss of Hemed has dealt a blow to the Phoenix’s chances of registering back-to-back wins over the surprise package Mariners as they are already one striker down.

The Israeli picked up the injury in the first half of the Phoenix's 2-1 defeat to Sydney FC on Monday. He was replaced at halftime after complaining of tightness.

I think the one thing that stands out with Pep is that, almost without exception, he improves players. This season his defence, which often was the weakness, is now the difference and Gundogan has been a revelation. Even Stones is playing out of his skin...

Yep, that's a really good point.
Pep turned Sterling into a top class striker. His decision making and finishing were poor, but now both are immeasurably improved.
True also about the defence and Gundogan.
Pleased for Stones and I really hope he's knocked those stupid errors out of his game as he's perfect for the way Southgate plays.
I said I never wanted him back in the England squad after his **** ups but maybe that was a little harsh.
