It was inevtiable that the internet idiots would eventually atempt to spoil what had become a quite sophisticated and intelligent message board with contributors who could debate matters linked to SFC without resorting to insults and lowering the standard. If we wish this site to remain what it had become and we value then action must be taken. This sentence has been edited by moderators...... Access to this site should be something valued and earned not something to be demeaned by societies dregs who are given free and open access. I am not elitist I am just selective. If I want to mingle with idiots and morons I know where to go but I don't which is why I have enjoyed my time on this message board until now. Decide what kind of message board you want and let the moderators know.
Know how you feel Godders, but I think we predicted this was going to occasionally happen. Someone comes along and tries to shake the tree. I remember when I came along, last July and you Pepys had been going since January. I had extracted myself from helping to moderate the SaintsWeb a few months previous, and was taking my time finding a nice site to chat all about Saints, without all the abuse that had become so much a part of daily banter within TSW. Of course, I had MotoGP chat to fall back on, and the BBC606 site wasn't too sleepy either. But it meant that occasionally I'd wander over to Saints 606 Football and see a few of you over there. Just reading and getting a feel of the place, that's all. When 606 ended, I went off to MotoMatters for MotoGP [turned out far too elitist for me] and an ex-BBC606er and fellow biker, Daggersfan3 [guess who he supports] told me Not 606 was starting up, so eventually I started reading this forum too. MotoMatters turned out to be not my cup of tea, so I said Cheers to them [and they very kindly acknowledged my leaving] and I signed up here. I have another forum for all things Honda VFR800. The thing I'm slowly getting at is... this site can be as elitist as you want, or have the common touch, it doesn't matter. What matters is that everybody who contributes is reasonably happy with it. Those that aren't know where to log out. When I signed here I knew this site was good. You guys got on with each other [you were the loudest of the lot, Godders ], save for a bit of Singing Blue 3 bashing. The other thing was that Pompey Pepys could come over here and not be virtually spat at, which was a nice change. It was an indicator just how far people would go to exchange opinion without resorting to abuse. And long may it continue.
I can't help but feel it's against house rules to personally criticize a specific member of the board in a thread? Anyway i would like to know how i have made this site any worse then it was before. For example my last two threads have had 5 pages of responses. If you don't like my threads, dont comment on them.
I want this board to be totally elitist. As you can see by my number of posts and points, my plan is one day to be the only person on this board....then Nicola and I will rule the world. Sadly I am going on holiday so you now have the chance to organise a coup, but be warned I WILL BE BACK!
Fran enjoy your holiday........ Sharpshooter.........just remember this is a public Site run by the fans of Southampton. In the main governed by the fans of Southampton. It has been made very clear to all that have joined this site, that all posters are welcome. However there comes a certain responsibility with that posting. This refers to the type of posting you make. Continually being crass and objectionable is not accepted on this board and will not be tolerated. The trouble is posters like yourself seem to think that this is what the majority want. As you can see it is not......We moderators continually get complaints about the way posters actually present themselves on this board. Both Private and public complaints. What you have to remember is this not a GC type site, it is a football site.. The rule on a GC site (general chat) are different to football forum sites. The way you put your argument is as important as the way you disagree. Moderators have a responsibility to try and let the football site run as smoothly as possible. If individual posters start to post just to annoy they will be taken out big time. I would suggest that you take note of what your site colleagues are saying and maybe try to be a little less challenging. There are plenty of posters that are controversial on this site. That frequently disagree (or agree) with others however they are not crass about it or insulting they argue their point. If you disagree then you disagree but they do not constantly keep bringing up the same argument in different formats. If the person they disagree about comes up in another conversation mostly they would respond by saying something to the value of "you already know my thoughts on that individual", or words to that effect. No one is trying to stop you having an opinion it is how you express it which is getting up peoples backs.
Getting a lot of pages of response is something which another poster on the Pompey board who we all know well achieves, but it is not usually for positive reasons. If someone is getting a lot of replies stating that they are just a WUM, then that is the way in which they are perceived. Once that happens, even a fair comment is likely to get a bad reaction, and then there are two ways it can go. That person either shapes up and eventually earns a better reputation by changing their tone or carries on upsetting people despite advice from the mods and that ends in a different way. Some will sail close to the wind and where to judge the borderline is something which Beddy, st_brendy and I discuss at length but any time that a poster is getting a load of flak from others, it's worth asking themselves, "is it me?"
I'd just like to reiterate what Beddy and Channon have said above. One of the things with not606 that I think makes it a much better place than other forums, is the fact that the Saints board is moderated by Saints fans, the Pompey board by Pompey fans, the Plymouth board by Plymouth fans etc. Over time we have been able to see what the members of our own boards are prepared to accept on our respective boards and make decisions based on that when it comes to removing or leaving comments that we feel are over the line. To this end, each board can be tailored to its members' wishes; material deemed inappropriate for xxxx FC's board may be perfectly acceptable on yyyy FC's board. Any-one who feels a particular comment is unacceptable on a public forum should PM the mods for that board. As far as Saints and Pompey mods are concerned we have an excellent rapport and will always put the good of this forum before our own club loyalties. Pompey fans can have the same faith in Beddy, Channon and Brendy as they [hopefully] do in meowth, P_F_L and I [and vice versa] The final point I'd like to remind every-one of is; if there's a particular poster whose 'contributions' are nothing but dross, you can simply go to their profile page and hit the "add to ignore list" icon. Let's keep the banter coming, but keep it friendly!
Elitism, as others have pointed out, isn't the way to go but people need to be civil. Surely we can debate things, have disagreements and put forward alternative points of view without resorting to abuse? There are other (Saints) forums where trolls and abusive people will be far more at home than here.
I enjoy a good debate, however they all too often descend into a slagging match. I was getting really annoyed in the closing weeks of the season when one week we'd win, and all would be rosey on here, and the next week we'd lose and all hell would break loose. Some people just can't keep a level perspective on things. I find myself glancing down at the threads and the opening comment and making a judgement on whether I think the discussions will include any reasonable debate or content. When they don't I just move on. You soon get to pick out those with enough intelligence to contribute sensibly, and those threads I read.
As Nigel would say "let's all just draw a blue line under it" let sharpehooter11 have his say if you don't like it ignore it and if it's offensive then contact moderator? Other than that... We are fans of a premier league Southampton fc!!
I'm new to the forum and I can see what you mean but if I don't like a thread I won't comment on it, some thread are serious discussions while others go way off topic but I enjoy reading and commenting on most threads
Dare I say it (and I don't wish to insult anyones intelligence here) but is this discontent due to the lack of a common focus (i.e no games) and/or a response to the low after the incredible high that this great club has just treated us to? Remember what Nigel says on this! I've noticed before when there are significamt gaps in games, there is an increase in threads that take on a petty and nit picky nature. Peaks and troughs. Like fatletiss says, a good skim over the threads and a quick peek often gives enough info whether to select in, whether its just to read or comment on. I still enjoy the site, and think its quite a nice eclectic mix, some of whom would be good company over a pint, some perhaps not.
I guess the problem is when the same arguments are rolled out no matter what the thread. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but if a thread suddenly goes off topic and on to one that has already been discussed, then we end up reading the same opinions and it gets a bit tiresome. One key thing to remember in debating is that everyone has the right to their own opinion and if it differs from your own resepct it. If you have to resort to insults then you have actually lost the argument. The same can be said for resorting to picking up somones grammer and spellin.
Just to remind you all we did get promoted this season...I believe it may have been the 2nd time in a row. Not 100% sure on this but if anyone can confirm it would be appreciated, thanks!
Yes, its true. And I'm sad to inform you, Jim Magilton has left his post at Ipswich. Still waiting for more details on this breaking news.
