Here's the update you've been waiting for...........<laugh>

Eventually got the replacement router from BT after being told they were out of stock. I'd left it a week and then enquired when I'd actually get it. It then emerged that their distribution warehouse had loads of them. The guy I spoke to had entered the code for an older model that was now obsolete - no wonder they were showing out of stock. <doh>

Anyway, got it, connected it, persevered for a week. Just the bloody same as the other one - device speeds (laptops, tablets and phones) varying all over the place and nowhere near what I'm paying for. <grr>

Totally pissed off with BT telephoned tech help, I raised a complaint. Got a phone call back yesterday morning. As I have the BT Halo 3 plus package, they'd send a home tech specialist to me either same day or the following morning to sort it out. Elected for this morning and he duly arrived - what a breath of fresh air talking to some who knows what he's doing rather than a phone conversation with some faceless prat based in Dundee. He sorted it out within half an hour.

Apparently, all the routers are sent out preset in a particular mode whether it suits your particular circumstances or not. So no matter what problem you might have, unless there is a specific fault/failure with the router itself, it will never be resolved by just changing it - that's just the easy fob off by the telephone call "experts".

He spent 20 minutes configuring the router modes to suit my devices and left me more than happy. All download speeds stable - 600 mbs on my laptops, 380 mbs on tablets and 300mbs on our phones. The guy was not a BT employee, he's a subcontract tech expert from Cardiff - another good reason for supporting City............<laugh>
