Have you ever thought what you would have liked to see if you could go back in time to a few Spurs moments from the past. Two come to mind. 1. I would love to have been "up north" to see Spurs win that Cup Final replay in 1901. 2.I would love to have been a "fly on the wall" as that Liverpool director received his back hander for voting Arsenal into Division 1 when not winning promotion,at Spurs expense. (The good thing was, Spurs won promotion legally the following season and the FA Cup again the season after. So good does overcome evil....sometimes!)
would love to go back to Gazza's wonder goal against the goons, that put us into the FA cup final v Forest
I'd go back in time and tell myself to sack off the ticket I had for our match at Pride Park in March 2001 and stay in bed for the rest of the day. It was sub-zero and there was three feet of snow covering Sheffield at the time, so the trudge from my student digs to the train station was a mission, the match itself was bloody awful - what little of the match I saw, as I was so busy trying to warm myself up I was unaware of the scoreline until MOTD that evening!
It would have to be the 60's, just because it's a completely different era and one where we had real success as I've done all the following you're club when it's ****, staying behind until the 91st minute in pissing rain watching Jason dozzell score to save a result against Sheffield United! Just to sample an era when we had a great team and to witness one of the greatest club teams ever, would be fantastic.
The player from that team who I'd bring back on my Tardis would be John White. Never saw him play but my uncle who was a Villa fan thought he was the best player in the world
Do you know,Burnley scored eight (8!) goals against us that season in the League ,but we got our own back in the FA Cup semi final! (Adamson must have had nightmares for the rest of his life after that game!)
We could try Lloris Chiriches Vertonghen Demblele Dawson Sandro Lennon Eriksen Adebayor Soldado Townsend The centre half was an out and out defender those days who marked the centre forward so it was really 343
I'd go back to a certain day in May 06 and kidnap the team from the hotel before anybody ordered "LASAGNE"
I'd go to a warm thursday night in may 1981 about 9.20pm when tony galvin passed the ball to ricky villa....the feeling of watching a great goal which won us our first trophy in my time as a fan will never be matched
I can remember going to Hillsboro to watch Spurs get their first defeat in 1960-1. That was abloody long trip home! We also had 17 year old Frank Saul scoring at Highbury as we won 3-2......and the 5-0 cup win over Sunderland in the replay.Man....Spurs really went to town in that game....and our crowd were going bananas too! What a noise.
I still feel miffed about that game & and an earlier one v Wolves when we were shut out. Both were midweek games & trying to get to Tottenham from the West End where I worked at the time was manic. Although we arrived well before kick off the thousands of people amassed outside had to be seen to be believed. We did not even get near to a turnstile before being informed the gates were shut. I had been to the away fixture in Sunderland but could not see the replay on my home patch! I felt so aggrieved by this I wrote to the club. Apart from every home match I listed all away matches attended, which was most of them, and suggested that something should be done to help the regular supporters, all members of the Supporters Club. I thought perhaps tickets could be issued in advance to SSC members or even our own turnstile! I ended by having a grumble about the complete lack of organisation outside the ground & hoped something will be done. Dated 9th March 1961. They replied on 18th March 1961 thanking me for my letter & regretting our experience. They thought I would agree that conditions were exceptional with such a rapid "build up" of arrivals at the ground was without precedent. In normal circumstances turnstiles are quite adequate & at peak times can admit 1,000 per minute. They said they had from time to time had similar suggestions for " Ground Season Tickets" but there are very considerable difficulties attendant upon such a plan which would, in our view, outweigh the advantages. signed R Jarvis, Secretary. When I think of the set up they have now with all the different memberships, loyalty points etc I wonder, was I the pioneer of all that with my humble suggestion back in 1961?
Yes,I can remember that replay very well...and the crowd!I got there early and it was still murder trying to get in.I finally did and got to my spot beneath the cover at the North end.(Hated getting wet!) I still have pictures of fans climbing over the gates. Makes me laugh now....what was it?60,000?...and today we can only hold 36,000! for a full house....... I never saw the Final at Wembley......I still have the ballot cards for that as I didn't have the correct numbers...Godamit!
I remember the night we beat Sheff Weds 2-1 to clinch the championship. I think the crowd was over 61,000. What a night that was!...
Be interesting to find out how our fanbase has changed but with how life is in terms of expensive, cost of living, ticket prices then football back in those days must have been easier to attend for your average fan then in today's game.
