We spend a lifetime trying to get into the champions league , but show
no real intent when we get there. This was a chance to cement our position
in the top 4 or at least give it a go but we did so little to be taken seriously.
A lot of cock and bull about signing top strikers . Fantastic offers for
real quality frontmen but just a smokescreen to pacify us. Never will these
players come to us on our ***in wage structure, except if they show
    sweet charity for our circumstance.
Modric can not be sold. If we do, this confirms we really are a selling
club. The player will have the same value in a couple of years because of
his long contract so if he acts up we can afford to leave him in the stands.
Not the best policy but the only one if we want to go foward. Bale would
go next. Nobody wants to come to us because we are Spurs. It is about
what they can get paid and what they can win. There are no noble ethics in our
beloved game just a bunch of mercenary players who will go anywhere for the
    above reasons.
We have to get real and talk the talk. Unfortunatly this is the way of the world,
and we have to pay the going rate, and add top quality to our first team. This will show everyone including our own players that we mean business. That way we can
try and stop the corrupt kremlin money moving in and destroying our dreams. The club have to be honest with us. Do we except this or do we demand true ambition?

A reasonable analysis but we need money to be more ambitious. But we could clear out ten of the squad and bring five much better players in.

i suspect the reason the top players don't come to us is more to do with winning the big trophies rather than just cash, but the two go hand in hand because if you can't keep the top players you won't win trophies

    <ok> Sidney Fiddler.

Problem is Levy is cautious and in a way that is good, we wouldn't wanna go the way of Leeds or other clubs that have risked it all and then seen it backfire.

I'm afraid that, until we get a new a stadium, our situation will not change appreciably.

Things are fine the way they are, all we need to do is clear out the dead wood in our squad. We could afford to lose 8-9 players at no real cost to us unless we get a real spate of bad injuries. Don't change the wage structure unless we're going for a smaller squad for the long term as it sets a precedent you can't step back from.

If we can't sell the dead wood Levy needs to be realistic, drop some prices and dare I say it take a loss on one or two. By freeing up money you can buy quality when it comes along, like VDV. Also gives youngsters and prospects a chance. Unfortunately for those who want us to take the next step. It wont happen without the stadium, at least not in a sustainable way which is why I'd rather we hold our ground and grow in a way that guarantees long term success.

Perhaps guarantee long term stability, success on the other hand, nope.

By all means lets give youngsters and prospects a chance, buy quality only when its at a knockdown price or by sheer bloody chance, but if you want realism what you are suggesting will result in mediocrity not success.

Fair points, but we are meant to be the 12th richest club on the planet. We have acted in the last couple of years as if we are in 50th position. Recently we have shown
no purpose, just empty PR from the club. I agree the stadium is a major problem, but that has always been the case. I just feel we could offer far more without any
    real financial risk.

Unfortunately, five of the richer ones are now in England. If we were in Italy, Spain or Germany, we'd have been in the Champions League most seasons and would probably be in the top 5 richest. Not being in the champions league is a disaster because it means we can't attract the quality players to get us above the other five Partly because of money and partly because of the lure of playing in the CL. There is no easy solution to this.

The CL is a big money exercise these days and is partly responsible for creating a monopoly involving only the biggest clubs with the biggest incomes. There is no quick solution as somebody mentioned, i wouldn't even call myself a 100% Spurs fan if i'm honest, but i still wouldn't like to see the club risk financial disaster, in chase of the CL. At present its good to be a Spurs fan, there are plans for a new stadium and we have a good young team. Just need to keep going in the right direction and improving where we can.

Unfortunately Lidls, we have to try and get there while 5 other clubs in our division spend about twice as much as we do on wages and at least one other still outspends us there, too.

Suggesting being bold and taking risks is just stupid.
That's basically saying that we should do a Leeds or do what Villa have done.

It's not a lack of ambition, it's a desire to keep the club from ending up in the ****.
We could vastly overspend and still get nowhere, as we'd still probably be spending less than those that finished above us last season, plus Liverpool.
Would anyone really want to see us buying Carroll, Adam, Downing and Henderson for £80m, for example?

I've been a supporter for more years than I care to mention. In all that time, I've seen more false dawns than I can remember. Having said that, the current squad has some of the best potential to succeed that we've had for 20 years.

I have to agree with the OP to a large extent. I'm fed up with hearing about what we are GOING to do. Let's see some action to back up all the promises.

We either push on from here, or it will be back to mid-table obscurity.

We can't afford to pay "competitive wages" Lidls, that's the whole point.

Big Bernie was a true lillywhite and a mate to the legend Morris Keston.
I'm off on holiday with Mrs Prodworthy and will back for a rest in a
    couple of weeks.
    Cheers

You may be on the right track, but if you stand still, you're gonna get run over! We're on the right track, but we've got to push on.
