http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/24105809 The Palace chairman says it is time to send off cheats like Ashley Young. Do you agree?
Agree too. All cheats like young, drogba. Suarez, Henry, terry and any other player who has deliberately taken advantage of the ref or tried to by not owning up to an offside or used their hands should all be red carded. Ok Terry's was a different kind of cheating but all had tried or actually conned the officials . They should all have been sent off
Totally disagree. It's very easy for refs to get it wrong with dives and there's a lot of disagreement as to what is and what isn't a dive. Pogrebnyak's sending off yesterday was a great example. He first got a booking for a poor challenge on the halfway line and whilst it was clumsy the replays showed contact was minimal and the player went down a few paces later when he could've clearly stayed on his feet. Then later in the first half he was being held by a defender and went over as many players do in that situation and got a booking for simulation. Either both are dives and bookings or neither are. If one ref in the same game can't be consistent then how are others going to be? It'll just be another tool for referees to use against all the small clubs but not the big clubs. If you're punishing diving it has to be done retrospectively but even then there's often a lot of hypocrisy about what is and what isn't a dive. Lots of players and ex players have said before that if there's contact they feel they have a right to go down(which the media perpetuate as well) which I personally think is diving. It's so common in the game today though, it's very rare that a player goes down and you feel they've tried their very best to stay on their feet yet every now and then someone like Bale gets punished for it and everyone goes "yeah, that was a dive" before going back to cheering on their own players doing the same. I think that if we bring in a rule it has to be kept very, very simple going only for dives where the player "starfishes" to get contact, starts going over before contact or throws themself over with no contact. Another key part is that they would have to appeal for the decision because if they do it shows they're committed to conning the ref. In punishment the only thing I'd distinguish between is whether they got a penalty from it or not, if they did then they've likely changed the course of the match by cheating so they should get an automatic 3 game ban, that way they might think twice about it. If they got a booking for a dive at the time or if it was outside the area then just give them a one game ban. If you have a punishment with different levels like this then you can influence behaviour of players and who knows, you might even get a player that dives, gets a penalty and then corrects the ref to say it wasn't one because he doesn't want the 3 game ban he'll get. What an acheievement that would be, creating an honest player!
It will never work, administrating the rules will always vary as they are open to interpretation by human's. Live with it
Would rather it was retrospective but then a harsher punishment. More importantly the belief that a player has a 'right' to go down needs to be done away with.
There needs to be retrospective action for a whole host of things and not just diving. Every Mon a panel consisting of 6 ex refs and players should review the alleged offenses and come to a majority decision. If they can't no action but if they can, 4-2 or better then a player should be punished. Refs should be made to explain their decisions as well. If they get it wrong then they should be given the opportunity to say so and then more people might have more respect for them and understand their point of view. None of the above will ever happen though. ManU will see to that.
This is the problem, because its a Man United player people bang on and on about it. Where was all this hype when Hazard and you can't forget the ASHLEY COLE dive to try and win a penalty at Old Trafford, why were non of you calling for him to be banned???? But as its United and all that
This is not just about United, but today it is particularly about Young, who is to my mind the most serial diver in the country with a history of diving for 4 teams including when representing England, I however donât want red cards for it because we still cant get the yellow cards right often enough and sending players off who have been fouled is in danger of causing too many additional justice issues with teams being reduced to 10 men when in its possible it should have been the other team who had fewer players, so retrospective bans it should be, I like the idea of the panel ex pros and refs reviewing the weekends action and making recommendations, and 3 matches for blatant dive in the penalty area, with this being doubled for each subsequent offence (and in Ashley Youngs case this should be back dated to equal a seasons ban just for the dive at Priestfield in the cup, and no I havenât forgiven him for that and never will)
Agreed. Something needs to happen, maybe every 2 yellows for simulation should be a 1 match ban then 4 yellows 2 match ban. Then if the ref's not too sure about a decision he can put it in his match report for the FA to look at it for them to issue a yellow... Doubt we will ever see players getting a straight red for diving
It's not really because it's United, it probably would've all blown over in the media but because someone at Palace has said there should be red cards for dives it continues being reported. It was the same when Pulis said something similar after Suarez has dived against them some years ago.
Like the idea of a retrospective review, which can look for cynical fouls, dives or any form of play that would normally get a card if seen. It works like a charm in League and Union, where the players know they are likely to be caught by the camera if not the refs. It doesn't "slow down" the play, undermine the ref, or any of the other excuses the Ludite FIFA and FA bodies regularly use to stop change for the good. I am in no doubt that all the reluctance to bring in Video judgement is simply about the fact it will make things tougher for players and officials to fix matches for the betting syndicates. It's happening in Cricket, in Snooker and believe me, in football as well.
I think the Clubs should also have a hand in stopping the cheating. United should suspend/fine Young for diving. Two years ago Fergie dropped Young for a couple games after he started diving. Although it apparently didn't work.
Red cards for diving will only end up being more controversial and divisive than diving is now. Take the Torres example last year - almost 12 months later and some Chelsea fans are still complaining about it and it would be ten times worse had he received a straight red for it with no foul beforehand. If the ref gets it wrong with a straight red, it'll affect the game much more than if they get it wrong with a yellow, and diving is just too difficult for a ref to be convinced of during the game. I think if diving was punished by a straight red, no ref would be willing to give out a red for diving as they would almost never be certain enough. Retrospective action could work, but as Arsenal showed with Eduardo in 2008 you can create enough doubt about even the most blatant dive if you assemble enough 'evidence'. Any player banned retrospectively would just appeal on the basis that some camera angles showed a tiny amount of contact and under the guidelines to refs they shouldn't book players if there's any contact between the players. It'll only work if this 'right' to go down when players feel contact is removed. I'd rather the rules say that a player has to make reasonable efforts to stay on their feet rather than go sniper as soon as they are touched. Problem is that may push it too far the other way and defenders will then get away with more shirt pulling and pushing in the box. I dunno, he did wait until after SAF had retired before breaking out his bathing suit again
Just let contact be allowed in football again, ban people who go down with no contact, laugh at people who go down under contact that wouldn't topple a 5 year old and play on. Job done.
There's no right to go down if contact is made at all, the criteria is that it shouldn't hinder a valid attempt on goal. Young goes down if someone breathes on him whether he's in a non-scoring position or not, the fault lies with the referees and the clubs and Manure have been a major player in building an empire of gamesmanship and ungentlemanly conduct under bacon face for the last two decades.
