With bids for of £50m for players like Torres and £35m for Andy Carroll on the last day of the transfer window is it time the transfer window was scrapped? All that happens is teams pay out silly money on the last day of the window to purchase players they want (Torres went from £40m to £50m in 2 days!!). I think it should be scrapped as the big clubs are still paying out ridiculous prices for players that other clubs cannot compete with. Each position should be given a maximum value (depending on which league the player plays in and if they have any international caps). Every club should have a maximum limit they are allowed to spend on players (at anytime) over the season. If they wish to go over this limit, they should be required to sell players to make up the difference.
 
The ideas you're coming up with are how the MLS is run in the 'States, do we really want to go down that road?

If you put constaints on spending, you are penalising clubs who have paid lots of money - they;ll never recoup their losses
 
I don't think you can stop teams spending what they want, but I think getting rid of the transfer window, or at least lengthening it would help reduce panic buying. You'll still get the occasional big fee, but not to the same extent. Does anyone, except Newcastle and Liverpool, really rate Andy Carroll at £35m, surely they could get someone better than him for that amount of money.
 
For £35,000,000 you could get 3 world class players! Andy Carroll is worth more than Norwich City it would appear!
 
Yeh DM, I'm pretty sure a bid of £35m would actually buy NCFC at the moment - even if Delia was previously after nearer £60m.
 
the window has always been a stupid idea foisted upon us by stupids. not bothered about the rest.
 
Samuel's article is full of self-serving justification for the "big clubs" continuing to have all the money, in the mis-guided belief that some of the crumbs from the cake will eventually find their way down to the lower leagues. Where the "big money" is going is into the pockets of players and particularly their agents, with little or nothing going into the development of young players in this country from the "big clubs", who'd rather buy a foreign player than bring through a youngster of their own.

As a result, the national team suffers, and good young English players loose out.
 
In my opinion all teams should be made to develop a minimum of 3 players through the ranks to first team (ie 3 players from academy to youth, 3 from youth to reserve, 3 from reserve to first team) each season. This way more talent is developed and less money is spent on foreign imports, which in my opinion is ruining the english game and England's chances of ever doing well in the World Cup. Look at some of the talent Norwich have brought through the ranks through the years,(Goss, Green, C.Martin, Eadie, Barham, Gordon, Sutton) there must be many talented players who never get to show their skills because the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal, Man Utd spend massive amounts of money on foreign imports.
 
Admittedly the list you've produced is impressive, but thats nowhere near 3 a season. I think we more need an England excellence centre, which runs a weekly training for all the youngsters not getting into their club side. And fund it so the players aren't out of pocket, so we get all of them to it. That way we'd have somewhere where all talent will be noticed, from whatever club. If you take everyone between the age of 16-21 from the top 2 or 3 leagues, and any other exceptional talents (spotted by scouts who go to training sessions rather than just matches), you'd have big bunch, which you could really do good things with.

Never going to happen though.
 
I have to disagree with the point that foreign imports stop talented English players come through. If they're good enough they'll make it somewhere even iif its not at one of the big 4. Without the foreign imports I believe the prem and English football league would be a poorer place entertainment wise.
