So is it Bosman signing time for Newcastle United?

The 1995 Bosman ruling made freedom of movement a lot easier for players, with out of contract footballers able to transfer to pastures new without a compensation fee normally required (there are of course extenuating circumstances regarding youth players moving between clubs in the same nation etc.).

Interestingly, a player named George Eastham sought to depart St James’ Park in 1960, citing a lack of habitable lodgings and deficient wage aligned to the second job that the club had supplied.

The midfield maestro’s contract expired but Newcastle United refused to release his registration. Ultimately, the 24 year-old was allowed to move to Arsenal for £47,500, but thereafter took his former employers to court as a point of principle.

Such things are not usually an issue in 2013 of course, barring the occasional facetious lack of co-operation between associations, something that awkwardly brought Olivier Bernard’s disputed relocation from Lyon to Newcastle to an excruciating standstill in 2000.

With Mike Ashley and co. hunting for bargains, it’s worth looking at who is up for grabs, which players of note are coming to the end of their current deals and the ones we should release in the summer of 2014.

Tackling the latter first – Dan Gosling, Shola Ameobi, Conor Newton, Remie Streete and Michael Richardson are the more notable players with deals rapidly coming to a conclusion.

Gosling has done well at Blackpool, scoring a couple of goals and showcasing a range of abilities, albeit he seems to have found his level in the second tier. To renew his Magpies deal would be a waste of money with the plethora of expertise in that area of the squad, as well as the midfielder’s injury prone nature.

Shola is a dilemma, a month ago I would have breathed a sigh of relief at his departure but the big striker seems to have found levels of consistency not customary with his usual bumbling routine. A one-year deal could serve as a fair compromise for the veteran, who in any case shouldn’t be starting every contest, as is currently the case.

Remi Streete has an abundance of ability and it would be careless to allow the teenage defender to depart in the manner of Bradden Inman last summer, surely a three-year extension would suit all parties.

Conor Newton and Michael Richardson don’t leap out as players who have the calibre to remain at a Premier League club. Newton has a good thing at St Mirren and Richardson can’t hold down a place at Accrington, they should both be granted their exit.

There are several high profile players such as Nemanja Vidic, Samuel Eto’o and Bacary Sagna on the prospective Bosman list, but none of that trio fit the Toon remit of young, hungry prospects on reasonably low wages.

Younes Kaboul might be worth a pop, although Spurs are likely to tie him up before he’s a free agent. Shane Long would be an intriguing alternative to the current strikers, sadly the livewire front man is likely to have another twelve months added to his current at the behest of West Bromwich Albion.

Sonny Aluko scored a belter for Hull against Newcastle earlier this season. At 24 he’s definitely carving out a niche as a skilful, string pulling attacker with the Tigers, but isn’t particularly reliable.

Athletico Madrid’s free scoring number ten/central midfielder Raul Garcia would prove quite a coup if he landed on Tyneside, I’d snap him up in a heartbeat if the bigger clubs remained seemingly unconvinced.

Bafetimbi Gomis is a more realistic target, having been trailed all summer. In the role of central striker he could probably flourish if Loic Remy stayed to accompany Yoan Gouffran on the flanks. Tom Ince seems like another sensible purchase.

Torino’s Danilo D’Ambrosio would present a handy option at right back, even allowing for the fact that his primary position is in midfield. That could strangely develop into an ideal scenario, as even if the Italian can’t get into the starting eleven he’d be high calibre cover in more than one area.

Beyond that, I can’t see a goalkeeper or centre half worth targeting among the potential freebies… Unless you rate the currently idle Titus Bramble, or Aston Villa decide to dump Seamus Given, with the ostensibly washed up custodian returning as a player-coach on low wages.

Anyway, when push comes to shove it seems as if Mad Mike and his whacky band of misfits might need to stump up a bit of coin in order to improve what’s currently on the books.

Even so, acquiring the talents of D’Ambrosio, Ince and Gomis would be no mean feat, simultaneously retaining funds for the likes of Remy, a powerhouse centre half and backup ‘keeper, although it will all visibly depend on who the bigwigs opt to retain at the conclusion of the current campaign.

 

We don't need good ol' Shay, he is only going to do a Steve Harper here. Unless in the future as a coach , would be fine for sure. We definitely should get nowhere near Titus. Bosman wise, only if the player has been thoroughly scouted.

Whether it's a bosman or not really doesn't matter, look what we signed Cabaye for when his contract was expiring, so too Sissoko.

What is more important is the quality of the player we are getting I think.

Furthermore, is there really any more need to want to help Mike Ashley save up again?

Where has the TV money for the past two seasons gone? We've already had the Andy Carroll money, Ba transfer, Leon Best and I really don't need to go on and all we've had is Remy on loan.


Excuses and more really... Really unhappy with how the club has fared in the past few transfer windows when we really had to strengthen. We're now still a RB short, a striker short, and if Willo had not made his spectacular climb in form, a CB short as well. Credit to Pardew for sure, making the lack in depth less evident, but still may I please ask this , for the umpteenth time, what has Joe Kinnear done in his capacity as Director of Football to date apart from trying to scout and snap up Shane Ferguson from Birmingham?

One thing for certain. there will be a lot written on who we will be after, Bosman deal or otherwise.
Most of it will be utter rubbish with just the odd touch of realism thrown in now and again.

If we can get Ince on a pre-contract agreement we will have done very well.

Been quite quiet on rumours, given we're just over a fortnight from the window opening. probably because every team who actually HAS money probably needs to buy someone.

 

Be interesting to see what Mike does. I suspect nothing but he does like January. Contrary to popular belief there is value to be had because of contracts. It depends if he feels we need anything. We know Pards wants a striker and probably more. However we also know he had very little money to play with in the summer. Much may depend on who's contract is running out in France!

 

I would imagine the list's about 4 or 5 strong. We could end up with all, we could end up with none. In order, CF, LW, RB, CB, CM. But each will have two scenarios - pre-contract, or purchase on the very cheap. There's no negotiation, just two offers per players. If ours happens to be the best, we get 'em. That's why we won't get Ince, Long, Menez, Gomis or Toivonen - there'll always be a better offer. We get the next tier.
