Sunderland seem to be missing from the list.
So that would be a big fat ZERO, or 0.000000% on top then....

    and quite rightly so.

These bloody referees have a lot to answer for.
Gus is the only person who has seen through the Conspiracies against Sunderland perpetrated by the cheats.

'Blame The Ref', could be a decent username for someone from the mackem board<ok>

Wasn't this a joke back in the day?

Why do all the girls love a Geordie? Because they stay on top for ages but always come second.

Sunderland are in the envious position of not having to pick out segments from football history to lay claim to any success , to my mind when you start to do this the findings are completely irrelevant , ANY team could pick out a period when they were successful but it is mainly wishful thinking and completely insignificant

    Here endeth the lesson

Between 1950 and 1960 the English cricket team did not loose a series against Australia, that tells you what a good team they have

True Albert we just take the lot whereas NUFC supporters would like to " Include segments out "

Does this mean the mackems have never been top of the PL? That is not acceptable for a club of their size with that fanbase. Their chairmen should hang their heads. If we go back past the last 20 odd years, when was the last day they spent top?

It really is amazing. It tells you how good they were at one stage because they still sit 10th in the all time list for points accumulated in the top flight (behind us by about 350 points in 9th). They have just gone to rat ****. Instead of building on that proud history, they have just let it slip into near irrelevance and become relegation battle mainstay for the best part of 80 years. Since they last won the league in 1935 they've had 4No top 6 top flight finishes, none since 1955. They've had only 3 top 10 finishes since then.

The relevance of those wins and good periods withers with every passing year. They were basically at a time when football was in its embryonic stages, and through war times when the competition was obviously lesser. Even the most ardent mackems recognise that though they will always have some relevance (a win is a win), they mean little in the modern age.

We say we are long suffering but only in terms of trophies. In the same period since 1935 we have 22 top 10 finishes, including 12 top 6 finishes, 9 since 1955. So we can't claim the same level of suffering, worth thinking about when people jump off the deep end about the slightest thing.

The whole North East needs something to happen. We've obviously been the more likely candidate for a long long time, but bar a few close scrapes, it hasn't happened.

I wonder what it looks like if you take out at least the first game, maybe two, which aren't realistic reflections of being "on top".

To be honest more like depressing than interesting at least for us. Fourth top of the "top of the table" league and we still haven't won anything of real note since 1969.

We should rename ourselves Aardvark United. We would always be top of the table in that period from when they announce the new fixtures until the first game is played.
