He's best known for reading football results on the BBC, but also used to read racing results on BBC TV. He read the classified football results for the last time yesterday. Joined BBC Sport in 1965, he served BBC Sport with great credit.

They should have let Tim Gudgeon finish by reading the late finishing result - Brentford 0 Charlton 1. Then we would all have known the answer to the future quiz question of what was the last result that he read out. Undoubtedly the BBC will get somebody very young in to take his place but I think it is unlikely that anybody will put in such an innings in our youth-obsessed culture.
