https://www.hullcitytigers.com/news/articles/2018/201718-chelsea-a-triple-trawler-tragedy-support/ The Tigers will help to mark the 50-year anniversary of the Triple Trawler Tragedy when they take on Chelsea in the Fifth Round of the FA Cup this evening. In front of a global TV audience of millions, the Club’s black and amber shirts will feature a special logo on the sleeve in the latest of a series of commemorations half a century on from a disaster that had a huge impact on Hull’s large fishing community and the wider fishing industry. In January 1968, three fishing trawlers – the St Romanus, the Kingston Peridot and the Ross Cleveland – left Hull and never returned. By February 5th, news of the fate of all three trawlers had reached home with the loss of 58 lives confirmed. It sparked a safety campaign, led by fisherman’s wife Lillian Bilocca, and led to the introduction of immediate reforms to the fishing industry including tighter regulation of trawler design and construction, improved safety equipment and legal standards for radio equipment on board. The campaign was the subject of BBC Four’s recent documentary ‘Hull’s Headscarf Heroes’. 2018 will see a number of events taking place to remember the events of 50 years ago, and the Tigers are delighted to be playing their part at Chelsea on Friday night. Following the game, the team’s playing shirts will be donated to local charities STAND (St Andrews Dock Heritage Park Action Group), Hull Bullnose Heritage Group, The Fishermen’s Mission and St John the Baptist Church all of which raise funds for projects that commemorate Hull’s fishing heritage. You can find out more about the charities here: www.hullfishingheritage.org.uk www.hullbullnoseheritagegroup.co.uk
They do something good like this and then completely over shadow it with a load of ****wittery with ticket sales. Still, fair play, it's a good move.
Unfortunately all their ****eittery makes you question their motives - is it genuine or just another opportunity for project philanthropkst/ knighthood - their unrelenting bad behaviour suggests the latter
Hull City stepped up to the plate at the time of the Triple Trawler Tragedy by playing a game against Motherwell with all the proceeds going to the Lord Mayor's Appeal. I doubt if anyone at the club is aware or remembers that.
I didn’t know that (bit before my time!), thanks for sharing. There are some great photos of the match day programme on EBay. There is an advert in the programme promoting a match against Slovna Bratislava. I wonder what that was in aid of? Can’t seem to find any mention online. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/20216648...9255-0%26rvr_id%3D1442938328792&ul_noapp=true
Scant remark towards the end of the game. How much did the club 'push it'? How much did BT think it was worth mentioning? Can think of other parts of the country where this would have been made much higher profile. Disappointing.
Agreed. I thought that it was very poor on BTs part. Obviously included reluctantly as they felt obliged to mention it. Leaving it as an afterthought well into injury time was shabby. Yadda, yadda, yadda, Willian worth a place on Tuesday Glenn? Yadda, yadda, yadda, let's spunk our pants over these Chelsea kids. Yadda, yadda, yadda, 58 men died somewhere, some time. Yadda, yadda, yadda, Chelsea took their foot off the pedal, yadda, yadda, yadda. **** right off you patronising gobshites with your ridiculous microphones, annoying pitchside interviews and obsequious Premier League mentality.
Burnys said on RH during the commentary that the badge was a 'splash or something on the shirts representing the 50th anniversary of the trawler tragedy.......' He did say it was a nice touch by the club and showed it had a heart. Also he knew that the shirts were to be auctioned off for charity but apparently knew nothing of this in advance of the game ?
They may as well have not bothered. Everyone knows the Allams have ripped the heart out of the club and they shouldn't latch on to something like this unless they are going to do it properly and announce it in advance. Maybe they should get themselves down to the Bullnose next year with a wreath and/or buy the land off Manor and do that area up and bugger off from City.
Said the master of stating the bleeding obvious. It was a fine gesture by the club and should have received a bit more publicity then it did. Everyone knows it was 'only' announced on Friday. The real question is why was it kept a closely guarded secret ?
The Allams are ****s, a vast majority of us agree on that. The club is generally a bit of an organizational disaster zone as a result, we can also all agree on that. What did anyone expect for this. ****s end of. CSM: Hmmmm Cavalry Sargeant Major? Conspiratiorial Suspicion Monger, or.....
