"I'm not party to the tiering system....."... I think that might have been a dig to the man on his left...

Aye, it was quite pointed wasn't it. The thing is, they've been pushing for tighter lockdowns, as it's one of the few times they've had to come out of their back office and have their decision making scrutinised, so they're always going to lean heavily on protecting themselves from criticism, and even then only specifically for the virus rather than considering any wider issues.

It means there is inevitably going to be differences of opinion between them and those tasked with dealing with the fall out.

He showed he did not believe in the tier system and that it would be sufficient enough to contain the spread.

Not the first time the scientists haven’t towed the line of narrative in these press conferences.

They shouldn't have to toe the line. They're trained and paid to have expert opinions.

The scientists are always going to want to go further than the politicians, they’re only concerned with the virus, not the impact of the measures.

Interesting to note the frosty (non) response to the questionf about (Innova) Lateral Follow Testing and the MHRA advice. They've upset the PM and Health Minister by blocking its use in self testing environments because, as previously mentioned, it misses more than 50 per cent of positive cases. Apparently "Operation Moonshot" has had a very bumpy landing and big plans for frequent testing in schools must now be under threat.

Bearing in mind that for 9 months they have spouted that they 'are led by medical science'....

That's always been the problem with this pandemic. Right from the start, nobody knew the answers and they still don't.

That's nobody's fault. But what really boils my piss, is politicians trying to attack the opposition just to score points.

Come together for once FFS! This is really important.

I know I know. NO POLITICS, but....

The very high false positive rate is often overlooked but it's a potentially huge problem. So many people having to self-isolate or wait for a repeat PCR result could adversely affect industrial recovery on one hand and cause increased school absences over the levels where no tests have been used. A difficult balancing act not really helped by an unreliable testing method.

There's another and potentially bigger issue that's discussed less often, and that's the false negatives.

I think that most of the concerns expressed do relate to the high false negative rate. False reassurance and allowing people to mix when they are actually infected is an obvious danger.

If a politician disagrees with the government's position, and is later shown to be correct, should they stay silent?

We had a big influx of second home owners just hours before the Tier 4 for London was confirmed and more came after. They are down here now just milling around and mixing. They are supposed to be locked down and observing Tier 4 rules. No chance. Really these guys just do what they want. They are that rich they think that rules don’t apply to them. If they do clear off back for their New Year parties in the capital then bloody good riddance.
