Just had a quick glance at the Clonmel card and I notice Wakea is in the first, a maiden hurdle, yet he already won a maiden at Down Royal in May????? What am I missing?????

Could not summon up any enthusiasm for the first day of the St Leger meeting, with the ‘Legends’ race won by somebody whose short career mostly featured armchair rides on blue-bloods trained by his father. Thanks to the meddling of Racing For Change, most of the decent races are crammed into Saturday, so I could not see me travelling the 40-odd miles to Doncaster for Thursday’s fare; however, I can manage a few hundred yards to the bookies... Ryan Moore may start the day with a winning favourite but Glitter Girl is a little short for one giving weight all round on ground she has not encountered. The May Hill represents the annual dilemma at this time of year: maiden race potential Blending versus solid juvenile form Kilmah. At the odds, I would be more inclined to go with the tough consistent Johnston filly under Franny Norton; however, she is unlikely to be allowed to steal this like last time by the four that re-oppose today and slow ground may be against her. Simple Verse is ducking a Group 1 engagement at the weekend to run in the Park Hill, suggesting exasperation with her poor form this term by choosing a drop in class over the course and distance of her greatest triumph. Ignoring her rating, this is very open with only seven pounds covering nine of the other fillies and mares. Abingdon is a three year old going in the right direction but California is also improving with her races but the concern with both is that neither has won on easy ground. With give underfoot, I cannot be having Central Square in first-time blinkers or Poet’s Word off a 10lb higher mark than last time in the 4:15. Whilst Bermondsey has an obvious chance on his close fourth to Baydar at Sandown, the one that jumps out at me is the twice-raced bottom weight LUSORY, who won comfortably on debut on easy ground.
Hello, all. Fair card ‘oooooooooooooooop’ at Doncaster and I would expect old boy Sir Michael to do rather, and I do mean rather, well this afternoon with ABINGDON (3.05) and POET’S WORD (4.10). Both appear highly progressive individuals and after 2 Listed successes I take the former to step up to Group 2 level with aplomb here. Abingdon did it really well at York, last time, and today’s step up in distance should bring about even more improvement. She looks a really classy filly to my eye. The latter also did it very well, on his previous racecourse appearance, this time at ‘Glorious’ Gooders. He has been raised 10 lbs for that win but the form looks very, very solid as the easily brushed aside 3rd and 4th have won since. Appears somewhat similar to the barn’s Stargazer in that he could in time progress to Group heats. Although, I say although, let’s hope Poet’s Word has more luck in running than that one did at the weekend. Good luck all.
Away from Town Moor I'd suggest an interest in Subatomic in the first at Chepstow. A Makfi filly out of a mare from the Altesse Royale family. Why is Moore not riding Abingdon?
Reminds me of the sprinter Judicial who when he was trained in the county ‘won’ a pair of 2YO maidens. Was second past the post first time up, at Newbury, before a few weeks later cruising to success in a Ffos Las maiden. Later in the year the winner of that Newbury maiden (Strath Burn) was disqualified for a positive drugs test and old boy Judicial was awarded his second maiden success!
Surely, its the weight isn't it?!? Both Abingdon and the Coolmore horse are carrying 8-7 and thus he's not on either.
Looks like the standard racing at Doncaster is slightly better today, even though they stuck an arab race in the middle of it. I'm very interested to see how Pretty Perfect gets on today. She has been used as a pacemaker in her last couple of starts but she did well to finish fourth in the Yorkshire Oaks. This step up in trip should suit her and give her the chance to wined it up from the front like we've seen this year with Big Orange. This doesn't look the easiest race to find the winner in with the likes of Simple Verse who back up at this trip has a good chance but she hasn't shown anything like the form of last year and has to give weight to the three year olds. Abington looks a nice progressive fillie but all her wins have come on fast ground, so I wouldn't be willing to side with her at the price she is. Several of these ran at Goodwood in a group 3 which California won and she would have a chance on that form.
I know what you mean and he is in my selections today but although he lost the Gimcrack at the start he did make up ground. Once pressure was applied I felt he ran off a true line. Was that because he couldn't take it or because he's still a bit green? I hope the latter. He's very well-bred being from the family of Magic Flute and Grand Lodge. His grand-dam is a mare called Beguine who is a half-sister to Grand Lodge. His dam is the well-named Start the Music: well-named if you know the Cole Porter song Begin the Beguine.In fact Start the Music is a half-sister to a filly of that name. Having got on a roll like that there must have been lots of possibilities for this horse's name but Uncle Hammy loses the plot and calls him Mubtasim.
Stormy Clouds should run well in the 3.40 for a trainer with a decent record in this race.Happy to take 7/1 Ew with the hope that she will at least place in a tight contest.

Most thrilling race I've seen this year (flat season) just now at Donny. Simple Verse slowly slowly reeling in Pretty Perfect Great finish!
