First day of the July Festival meeting at HQ looks like a couple of good opportunities for Godolphin. I thought Frontiersman put up an excellent effort last time and he is clearly progressing in the right direction quite rapidly. With question marks against several of his rivals in the Princess Of Wales’s Stakes (e.g. Hawkbill needs it easier), even the bookies see him as the one to beat. Sadly at short odds, I will only be watching. In the opening race, ATTY PERSSE steps up to pattern company after an impressive victory at Royal Ascot. There does not look to be any reason to think that Roger Charlton’s Frankel colt is not capable of performing at this level whilst a couple of the opposition may not be favoured by the ground or the distance, so the bet of the day does look to be in the opener.
Two main bets for me today. TAMLEEK - 1:50 Newmarket - 16/1 Though Atty Persse is the most likely winner, I can't resist a little each way on Tamleek. Form in the Chester Vase reads well in the context of this race, and is a course winner over 10f (a trip that is inadequate to my eye). You've got to forgive him the run last time, but i'm prepared to do that at these odds, taking into account that the trip was too short and he wasn't given the best of passages. Factor in that he hits the stats, the form of the yard, and I think there's every chance he'll be attacking the places come the final furlong. FRONTIERSMAN - 3:35 Newmarket - 6/5 (coral) How is this horse still 6/5 with the defection of second favourite Poet's Word (who I thought might edge it)? Wheelbarrow is out and emptied for this one.
Cannot wait to see what the Nortonizer does on Love Dreams in the 3.00 at Newmarket - scream out and hold on! Brian the Snail anyone? OK, thought not. Hmm might have a little interest in Buick's rides at Newmarket, could be some value there for a small multi bet. Away from the highlight meeting, I'm also keen on Tempuran in the 1.40 at Doncaster. After Newmarket, Buick heads to Newbury to ride White Desert in the 7.35; maybe we should take the hint? Good luck to all, enjoy the day.
Off to fuertaventura tomorrow and I noticed one that ties in with the Spanish language that I should be backing today el hombre (The man ) running in the 310 at Carlisle . But I can't take the chance as I much prefer HENLEY at 6s
2.25 Newmarket Denaar 14/1 3 places Denaar 11/1 4 places Denaar 8/1 5 places I think this is a fairly decent horse but struggled to find a nice rhythm last time out at Ascot. With Frankie knowing the horse a little better than Smullen I like the chances of this one to place and with a pull in the weights there's a win prospect as well.
Not sure why I went for a Frankel son over 1m 5f with a stiff uphill finish. The winner was the form horse, having been beaten only 2¾l by Permian and 2½l by Shutter Speed
No probs, crazy price tbf. Appleby seems to be convinced that he stays, he got away with it at Newbury with a soft lead against horses who probably werent properly fit imo. Always been one of those horses with the tactical speed to take advantage of a slow pace and smallish field at Group 2 level I suppose he has a chance if Muntahaa isnt ridden for the lead. If this was 1m2 id say he would be nailed on in this field but I think it would need to be Oceans 11 for him to steal it.
Not sure this is Frontiersman ground today and there is no way he should be 6/5, id make Wings Of Eagles fav but ive always liked Algometer and think he is open to more improvement.
