The world cup opening ceremony will be in full swing on itv Got me thinking, what is your most memorable world cup Mine is the hand of fat coke heed, really thought we were gonna win it and still think we would have, if it wasnt for his cheating and brilliance
Gotta agree mate. I was into fotty from '86, the first one I watched, but Italia '90 was when I fell in love with the game. I remember that tournament vividly, we'd come back from Tenerife that morning, watched the first game at my nans, Argie keeper ****ed up and gifted Cameroon a 1-0 win. I distinctly remember England being poor almost throughout, outplayed by Ireland, then Belgium, then Cameroon, but muddled through to the semi, where we were absolutely fantastic, only to get ****ed on pens. I remember Michel of Spain scoring a hat-trick v Korea, Mattheus with 2 stunners against Yugoslavia, Rijkard frogging in Voellers mullet, and Maradona carrying a shocking Argentina side to the final, single handidly ripping through Brazil & gifting Cannigia a goal en-route. Class tournament, that was me hooked forever, aged 10.
France 98. Running home from primary school in the 45 minutes between the end of school and kick offs.
well I was only 11 but it has to be 1966 The two best things I have seen in my life England win the World Cup and Sunderland win the F.A cup not be many Mags left alive that can say that lol
90 was the one that made me sit up and notice international footy, I was 5 in 86, vaguely remember it.
1978... I remember being mesmerised when Argies played Italy and the crowd erupted and threw blue and white ticker tape everywhere. Mario Kempes could stop scoring. 1982.. We are Ron's 22 !!!.... Mostly remember the Italy vs Brazil game.. Wow ! 1990.. Thought we could win it.... I was in Hamburg for the Semi (what a night!!)
All you old ****ers ages are coming out now mind, was starting to feel old myself so this thread is like being in Cocoon. Sound.
I remember 1982 as my first one. I was 8, but I've been hooked from 1990 which as yet remains my favourite. So many great players. Loved watch Romania, the Germans, the Dutch, the match between the Germans and Dutch. Cameroon v Argentina opener what a game that was. Yugoslavia had a great team. Platts goal against Belgium, gazza being awesome. Italy and Baggio and schilatchi....the only disappointing thing being the argues ruining the final by behaving like Argentinians. That little gesture from bobby Robson when we bowed out. Great memories.
Best frogball ever? Vollers face man, hahahaha.
The first WC I remember properly was Argentina 78. Just like Home and Away it was the ticker tape that caught my imagination - it was a far sight from the bog rolls I'd seen thrown at league games here (why did they do that??). That and Archie Gemmill's goal against Holland. Looking back they really did blow a chance to get far cos that was some team they had then. I remember thinking we were gonna do well at 82 but it all just fizzled out. In 86 I was just finishing secondary school and me and two mates started up a bookies and took bets on the finishing order of each group, and also eventual winners. Nobody got all the groups right and we made about £400 which was a tidy sum back then. My mate's little brother tried the same thing 4 years later with his mates. they got caught and suspended .

I can go back as far as 1974 and the final between Holland and the Germans. The thing is there will be little kids who are watching their first world cup, how exciting it must be for them. It's a great spectacle.
I am with Gonads, I guess were about the same age because I remember 86, my dad took me to the shop to buy pop and crisps to watch the game (I am sure his cans of pop was larger). I will never forget that feeling when we got beat (in unjust circumstances) and were out. The Italia 90 my favourite world cup, it had some class players, but in Gazza we probably had the best player and in Lineker the best striker. We were so close to making the final and again I got that feeling when Waddle smashed the pen over the bar. 98 was also memorable, I was at uni and I remember watching the Argies game in a pub on broad street, I was pissed and sat outside afterwards thinking, we have got to wait 4 years to get revenge. The ones since 98 have all been a bit ****e, we have not had the player since then to compete with the best sides in the world.
