Magpies make move for Cisse Newcastle are closing in on a £10million swoop for Freiburg striker Papiss Cisse, after reportedly opening talks with the Senegalese hitman. The 26-year-old has emerged as one of the most feared strikers in Germany over the past 18 months after notching 22 goals last season and having nine to his name so far this term. The likes of Arsenal, Tottenham, Blackburn and Aston Villa have all been strongly linked whilst Sunderland were understood to be close to sealing a deal last summer. The Black Cats have again been strongly linked this January, but it is now believed that Newcastle are close to pulling of the coup. Cisse is currently away with Senegal on African Nations Cup duty, coincidentally with prospective new Newcastle team-mate, Demba Ba. According to Sky Sports, Cisse is flying into Tyneside on Tuesday to undergo a medical and finalise the deal, before flying back out to Africa and linking up with his Senegal team-mates. Newcastle are real dark horses; got to say that's the way to do transfers, quietly and only in the news when the medical is imminent.
This is what irks me the most. We're linked to all kind of donkeys up front and then Newcastle goes about their business nice and quiet. This lad won't cost much more with fees and wages combined than Zamora, it's quite baffling if you ask me. Tons of potential, Newcastle will be terrifying up front with this lad and Ba. Best partnership since the nineties with Shearer/Ferdinand.

How many times have we been asking for a fox in the box apart from two goals the farthest out he scored was the penalty spot, this guy lightning fast in the six yard box and has a great positioning sense, looks like a goodun.
Toon will have been working on this for some time. Our scouting network is non existent, I think NW probably worked the old fashioned way, manager to manager/ word of mouth, which is why, with the exception of Ali (pre Warnock) and Perrone (Paladini buy?) all our squad have played in England (haven't checked, so probably wrong on this). Hughes may be aware of some foreign gems but has not had an organisation behind him to further negotiations until a week ago. One of his jobs is to develop scouting, and on the evidence of previous clubs (eg Samba to Blackburn from Hertha Berlin for £450k) he's good at it. Patience lads......
We were rumoured to be interested in Cisse last year when Hughes was with us. Looks excellent potentially, just grateful he won't be in the Newcastle squad on Saturday.
