There's also something bleakly ironic in passing away while you're in pursuit of fitness to prolong your active life - I've lost two work colleagues on the squash court, one in the gym and one on the football pitch. The glorious uncertainty of life, eh?
Never had much faith in getting fit. The way I see it, when you first come into the world, you are born with a credit of so many heart-beats and so many deep breaths which varies from person to person. Why fritter any away "getting fit"? You are only wasting your "inheritance" and shortening your life.
I have to agree with Eddie. Why people waste so much time in fitness clubs is beyond me? Geoff Hamilton was out running when he died, if he had been sitting in front of the TV, it would probably never have happened! My dog's got cancer, I took him to the VET a few weeks ago "Oh he's putting on weight" says she "yes, I give him tinned dog food now as he prefers it to the dry stuff" says I "the added weight will not help him" says she "he's dying of cancer" says I...... "let's face it, if he's carrying a few extra pounds when he dies does it matter?" "no" says she "if he gets pleasure out of eating food he likes, then he will enjoy his last few months far more than if I give him just dry food so he's getting tinned food" says I "that'll be £45, pay at reception" says she Moral of this story.... enjoy life while you can, eat, drink and be merry for tomorrow you may ...........
I think there's a lot to commend both these points of view. I remember Dennis Potter's final interview with Mervyn Bargg - Bragg said "You're smoking a lot". Potter's reply, which I heavily paraphrase, was to the effect that it was a bit late to quit...
