I've just seen yet another brainless TV show trailed on ITV. This time it's 'celebrity' karaoke ffs, no doubt featuring people who are such celebrities they have to explain who they are.

But my gripe is that TV is becoming an endless series of popularity contests whether it's someone putting on make up or sewing up a dress. People are actually watching someone bake ffs <laugh>

But, seriously, there's a massive contradiction here. We're always being told how much pressure children are under and how everyone should feel 'included' and valued. Then these TV shows endlessly separate people into winners and losers. Viewers vote for their favourites which seems to based on who they like best rather than their 'talent'.

In reality only weirdos would walk down the street to watch someone bake scones or do ballroom dancing ...

... what next 'Celebrity hoovering in a mask' <doh>

Anything that smacks of reality tv, should be avoided...

Speaking of which, off to Chester-le- Street in about an hour... only problem being will the cricket be over before the football?

I remember 4 channels and a telly test card!! When TV was written to the schedule and there was nothing else to watch! There are now hundreds of channels, streaming sites etc and terrestrial TV has to fill their airwaves with utter garbage!! And they do, and idiots watch it. X factor was ok to start with. Then it turned into utter dross and, as you say, became about who was most popular and stopped becoming a singing contest.

The list is massive! X factor, BGT, masked singer, even masued dancer ffs, the voice, etc etc etc.

I'm not an avid watcher of Bake Off or the Sewing Bee but I have seen occasional episodes. If these programmes reignite the public interest in practical skills like baking and sewing I think they're a good thing, demonstrating that there is an alternative to today's instant gratification, expect-someone-else-to-do-it, throw away society.

They are certainly more beneficial to society than the vacuous and morally bankrupt raft of reality shows like Love Island and Too Hot to Handle.

  6. Modern TV is dreadful. It's cheaply made, poorly conceived programmes, infested with ever longer advert breaks,or,in BBC case, previewing their next rubbishy offering or advertising their products. In most hour programmes, there can't be much more than 40 minutes of content.
As a side issue....another whine I'm afraid....why do the BBC swap programmes half way through from BBC 1 to 2? I'm watching the tennis last night on 2....it then switches to 1....then it's advertising on 1 that Eastenders, normally on 1,has been switched to 2!
Why not just leave the tennis on 2 and Eastenders where it's always been on 1?
I believe the BBC is a shadow of its' former self,in the control of the lunatic fringe and not fit for purpose, but what's the point of this channel changing....genuine question?

Caught my mrs watching some bollocks yesterday, they’ve put some people in a villa somewhere, said there’s a £250k prize fund at the end but every time someone engages in sexual activity it takes money out of the winnings. Who dreams this **** up? And who’d be that vain that they’d want to be part of such a thing? It beggars belief.

Get ready for the love island hype now too. <doh>

I hope the weather is good for you, it should be a good game, watching live cricket is the one of the things I miss since moving abroad.

    Enjoy the day out.

I'd love to think people watch these shows and actually try what they're watching ...

... some might try a bit of baking but I doubt many rush off to restore a French chateau or a vintage Bentley.

I tried dancing around the bedroom in a mask and Mrs Smug slept on the settee <doh>

A number of years ago someone surveyed somehow and stated that despite a huge surge in viewers for all the various cookery shows, home cooking was continuity to decline. Probably down to the British increasing obsession with junk takeaways

Its easy money for the production company....Looks at the figures "Get me out of here I'm a celebrity" get....shows like this are aimed at the lowest common denominator...Never fails to amaze how people can sit through this s hit......but they must, and it must pay, because advertisers fall over themselves to be associated with this tripe and as I say the viewing figures are huge.

I completely agree this reality tv is madness. In our house all the singing ones are on, but thankfully nowhere near me. Fortunately none of this love island rubbish - Cilla Black would be in tears I reckon. There is even celebrity master mind. How such an iconic show can have that done to it is beyond me.

There is still some cracking tv though if you can sift out the rubbish. Just watched Time and that was good. Others from recent years have been The Serpent, Bloodlands, Chernobyl etc.

    Four!
    You were lucky!
We got a telly in, I think, 1956 when ITV started.
Astonishing to think Corry started only 5 years later.
    And the toothpaste ads.
You'll wonder where the yellow went when you brush your teeth with pepsodent.
    Great days.
