..... On premier league football in the UK, I am real glad this landlady won the latest round of her battle, a friend of mine who owns a pub was fined more than £11k for showing sky sports without a pub agreement, ok he was in the wrong but sky wanted almost £700 a month for the this, just legalised robbery ! http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-15162241
I think it will have an effect this season, which is great news for pub owners and fans, but like the article said, the premier league have dealt with licensing problems before, and with Sky involved it will get sorted for next season. It will probably just drive prices up for people living in Europe, because either the premier league, or Sky, will probably tighten up the licensing laws, and charge everyone the same price across the board. And, in fact, the price may even go up because of the extra work needed to ensure their copyright protection
I hate Sky and all it stands for. Imo, it is responsible for the stupid, obscene wages that footballers earn, the cost of which the clubs pass on to their supporters pricing many of them out of the grounds. Just compare the cost of admission in the UK to many other countries. So the football fan now has to go to his local to watch a game only to find that his local cannot afford the extortionate fees that Sky demand. In my area several places have ceased to carry Sky because of the cost. So what choice is our fan left with? Subscribe to Sky which is what that greedy *#!! Murdoch is after, or go without. The problem is that many people just cannot afford Sky; in good times the subscription was a big ask for many families, nowadays it is impossible for most. In the name of greed, Murdoch has systematically stolen our national sport and made it unavailable to the masses who made the game what it is. Football is part of our culture and heritage and that vulture has robbed our society of it. Frankly, I hope Sky and all it stands for rots and good luck to anyone who slips out of their stranglehold. Well done Mrs Murphy and if there is a fighting fund to help pay her costs, I will gladly donate.
I think pubs like the Mill and the Westbourne on Bryn-Y-Mor Road have been anxiously watching and waiting for this result. On the face of it the case has been decided in the landlady's favour but I can see a number of ways that Sky can tighten up this loophole, as Leeeeon says above and it may result in subscriptions actually going up! I'm not entirely certain it will have a massive effect this season, though. The High Court won't even list the case for a while yet.
I don't think it's going to change things as much as everyone, including me, is hoping it will. BSKyB will manage to get around it with strengthening their copyright on the footage, especially with the £££ they can throw at the best legal minds in the country. I read somewhere it could be prevented by something as easy an a BSkyB or Prem League logo on the screens which will make it very difficult for decoders to show the matches without breaching Copyright as the ruling did state that the decoders cant show things like, graphics, half time shows, highlights etc as they will be protected by copyright. I hope it drives prices down though as they charge astronomic fees!!
every pub, club here shows foxtel which i assume is the same as sky, i wonder y the difference, cost?
Because sky are money grabbing bastards, they go by the size of the pub, how many seats, how many people can get into the pub, then charge accordingly , forgetting the fact that most pubs are struggling and there is no way that a pub is full every day, the big chains like weatherspoons probably get a huge discount due to buying power. Basically it's a rip off and I just can't see sky being able to maintain it as pubs will pull the plug or as my mate did chance their luck
Exactly. The answer is, sadly because they can... and are allowed to. Internet streaming all the way. Anyone with a half decent connection is able to watch any game live, which is more selection than Sky offer!!
Sadly the streams are often of bad quality in languages you don't speak or get shut down quickly, I would gladly pay say a £100 a year to get a quality legal stream to watch every game, that is the way forward imo cheap enough for people to subscribe and of a quality that it is watchable.
But will the Prem players still have the quality if the Premier League's income from Sky drops commensurately?
They will have little option, if a wage cap came it at £100k a week for prem, £20k for championship, £10k league one, £5k league two that would be sustainable IMO , they would still be earning £5m+ a year maximum. There needs to be change in a lot of facets of football, obscene wages and agents earning a percentage on transfers etc should be looked at. The sky money should be distributed more at grass roots football , if 10% was put there that would put almost £100m over 3 years into schemes that would bring on young players hugely.
I understood the judgement was that the Landlady won only in respecyt that everyone can get a foreign decoder and watch Premiership games for private viewing but the Landlay and anyone else is not allowed to stream non-Sky Premiership content to a public audience else they are breaking Premiership copyright. Murdoch dont you just love him!!!!
Sky is a massive rip off. I pay 20 quid a month to get ALL premier league games . I see every swans game live then i can watch all the other games if i choose. When you consider everything basically costs double in Norway it is the same as paying a tenner back home!! Shows you how much people are being ripped off doesnt it. I can purchase on a monthly basis also ,so im not tied to any kind of contract what so ever.
This issue is a double edged sword IMHO. We have dreamt of Swansea becoming a premier league team for years and in the play off final it was described as the £60 million game. The premier league is the best in the world and the reason for this has been the investment by the TV channels, Sky being the predominent one. The main issue is the way modern clubs are alienating themselves from the common, working class. Sky is relativley cheap compared to a season ticket. Thats the way football is going. Id rather it be fought out by TV companys than Russian and Arab investors who are taking over our teams.
Ivor well said, I think we all feel the same way on this issue of the Sky monopoly, I just hope this girl gets plenty of backing to break this Sky scam, and bring fair and honest coverage of footy for all, what a landlady, hope her local community get behind her, well done Karen Murphy, notice to get justice though, she had to go to the European Court of Justice, the interesting statement from that court was "National legislation, which banned the use of overseas decoders, could not "be justified either in light of the objective of protecting intellectual property rights or by the objective of encouraging the public to attend football stadiums". Big business and politics in this country, is nothing but a bloody racket, man do we need a successful modern day Guy Fawkes!............ please log in to view this image
