1. City “won” the 2014 summer transfer window, and were ultimately relegated. So it’s with no little hesitancy that we observe that the latest incarnation went very well for City – but it’s still hard to conclude otherwise. 2. Last season was all about acquisitions, which saw us coo excitedly as Steve Bruce went really quite berserk in its final days. This time, the aim was a little more pragmatic: hold on to what we have. Save for the loss of Nikica Jelavić, who’s no loss if he can’t be arsed, everyone else stayed. 3. Elmohamady is still here to pepper backpedalling defences with crosses, though he must have hoped that a Premier League side would make a late move for him. That’s good news – he’s a fairly long-serving player now, almost a part of the furniture, and losing him would have been a bitter blow, even though Moses Adubajo shows promise – better to have them in tandem than one replacing the other. 4. We wonder whether Davies and Dawson where pensively checking their phones last Tuesday, hoping that a late move would materialise? 5. It’s unlikely that Tom Huddlestone thought that being dropped for a Championship game was the ideal way to advertise oneself for a move back into the top flight. He hasn’t deserved a game in the second tier recently, let alone the one that Sky tell us, with increasingly desperation, really is the best in the world, honest. Now that the reality of a full season in the Championship has been confirmed to him, his reaction will be interesting. Though probably filled with sulky self-pity if August was anything to go by. 6. He’s not alone in having to knuckle down now that the Premier League dream has died. Abel Hernández has been refreshingly lively so far this season, but was he playing for himself and for City, or for a move? We’ll soon see. 7. We can worry about all of that another time though. By keeping everyone and adding Adama Diomande (of whom we know little but who seems worth a crack), City undoubtedly have one of the strongest squads in the division. The bookies make us strong second favourites for the title and as short as 2/1 to be eventually promoted. 8. Brighton next up. They’ve started strongly and could be our sternest test to date. City’s season so far has been three home wins against lesser opposition and two mis-steps on the road. It’d be nice to get that first away win sooner rather than later, lest a complex about winning outside of East Yorkshire begin to develop; it’d also be yet another powerful statement of intent to visit the early-season league leaders and beat them. 9. Then, in a pretty unsympathetic twist for the travelling fan, we have Cardiff three days later. That’s a lot of miles in a short period of time, but a reminder of how brutal the Championship can be. They’re only a point behind City too – this is going to be a very hard week. 10. A City’s decision to beam the game back to Hull is an interesting one. It’s unlikely to impact too much on what’ll already be a small away following, because if you’re going to travel to Cardiff on a Tuesday night you probably won’t be deterred by the fact it’s being shown at the KC – especially not in the live streaming age.
