Alan Pardew has warned that Newcastle United â a club that once smashed the world transfer record to sign Alan Shearer â can no longer compete financially with the Premier League elite. The Toon Army are up in arms over the Magpiesâ *failure to use cash from the £35million sale of England striker Andy Carroll to fund big signings this summer. But Pardew admits that under owner Mike Ashleyâs prudent self-sufficiency plan, Newcastle days of splashing out £15m on Alan Shearer and £17m on Michael Owen are consigned to the history books. Pardew said: âThe problem is where we are now financially means that we can never really fulfil the expectations of the fans. âThey have memories of *European football, but the gap is getting bigger as the years go by. The top clubs are getting an influx of money at Champions League level and we have sovereign states owning football clubs. âIt is becoming difficult to *compete with the top clubs, but that is not to say we canât compete at the level we are at. But we are always vulnerable to the bigger clubs, as Andy Carroll proved. âThat makes it difficult to *manage but not impossible. âMike Ashley (left) and Derek Llambias made it quite clear â the club needs to wipe its nose and *therefore we havenât got investment above our income. âThat is how Mike wants to run the football club. âOther clubs spend more than they earn and Manchester City have been able to break into the top four for that reason. They have a sovereign state backing them. âWe canât compete with that. It is very difficult. We can only *compete 11 v 11 on a Saturday.â The Toon boss insists his first big task this season is to get fans talking about football again rather than off-field controversy. Pardew added: âI hope I can get the club unified again. When the ownership of the football club is in the forefront of the *conversation, it is a problem. âI want people to be talking about the football team here and what the players do on the pitch.â Pardew will not make predictions on his sideâs chances in the new campaign until he manages to strengthen the squad further. He said: âIâm fairly confident we will get the players in we need. I agree with what Pardew is saying here and reckon most clubs (including yours) will need be run like this anyway to survive.
I do agree with you most clubs including ours need to watch what we spend and not spend beyond our means. But it has got to piss you off 35m for caroll 4m for nolan and none of it has been put back into the club. We sold bent & henderson but at least we have brought players in.
I don't disagree with prudence but when Caroll was sold Pardew was on-message that ALL of it would be spent on the club... and now it turns out that this incudes general 'running expences'... slice it any way you want but Ashley/Pardew deceived the fans by what they said at the time. Just not sure whether Pardew was in on this deception or simply a catspaw, or dupe, if you will.
Pardew said he went to Ashley and said the money would need to be re-invested in the team. Reckon Ashley has said yes but went back on his word as such.

How recent was it? there was some stuff a while back but that seemed to just be rumours. Not heard anything like it recently. We'll all be living in hope though
