They need downtime too - right?

We've all seen pictures of players in bars letting their hair down in the off season having a few beers, being one of the lads etc. <ale>

These guys are special football players, they are gifted athletes. They work hard at their profession and most couple that hard work with a natural talent. They live well, are paid a fortune and live a life most of us can only dream of.

Some drink, some smoke -so what? No harm done huh?

My point is this - all of them would be better players without alcohol, nicotine and the accompanying lifestyle they bring. They should realise how lucky they are and LIVE like an athelete to maximise what they can do for OUR club. Try telling pro triathletes, cyclists, sprinters that 'the odd night on the lash 'does them good!''

Professional footballers should be just that - professional. If they can't resist the trappings of youth for a very short career as a top sportsman then maybe they are in the wrong game?

    Discuss ;) (btw I drink. A lot. :emoticon-0100-smile)

Not everythng is fine tuned health.

I think the occasional few beers together and a bit of craic is ok, the morale would do more good than the beer would cause damage surely. A balance though as always.
I don't like that some players like to go off in a bunch out on the town on the piss and end up getting arrested. Phill Babb is an idiot, him and McAteer pretending to be "The Professionals" rolling over car bonnets in Dublin, Oh trigger you numpty

Don't sign pissheads I would say, and Kenny has to keep an eye on Carroll and if he acts the bollox he's gone, no doubt about that, Kenny ain't about to take sheite 35m or no 35m

As for down time, don't they get summer holidays to go off on te rip.

I wonder if contracts these days have a code of conduct included

Nothing wrong with the odd drink here and there but to be out on the lash every week would be unprofessional.

Pete Townsend once said he couldn't believe how well he played the first time he went onstage without having had a drink or a drug.

He'd never have written anything decent without them, though.

Carra said in his book he always thought a few beers a few days before a game was okay until Houllier explained how long the effects last. But summer hols give them plenty of time to detox.

I reckon once they are on holiday they can do what they like..within reason. So what if they have a few beers during the summer. The sweat is going to be pumped out of them as soon as they hit pre-season training. They know as soon as they arrive back..its hard graft.

A few beers is fine - after all they are human and should be allowed to enjoy themselves from time to time. If they didn't this could actually effect them as a person, therefore effect their careers. A few beers with your mates is good stress relief so its a thumbs up from me <ok>

Smoking though is a different matter. I still find watching old games funny when managers and coaches sit in the dugout with a ***.

Why aren't managers allowed to do that any more? More health and safety bullshit?

There's a gag here somewhere using the US interpretation of the word '***' but I can't be arsed!

Like most people have said on this thread, the odd drink every so often isn't too bad. I understand your points about the fact that they are professional football players and shouldn't be doing things like this but, in my opinion, letting them relax is a good thing. You could argue that it helps morale. I do agree with you regarding smoking. I don't think any professional football player should smoke because it seriously damages their health. The odd beer does not.

The players are on holiday what is wrong with a few pints
Like everyone else they go on holiday they want a drink
As long as they drink in moderation and don't act the goat like some do
I don't see anything wrong in it
