The Premier League has just announced over £3BN in income from Sky and BT for three years. That means the income per club will soar and change minds about 3 year plans. I was hoping they might reduce what they were willing to pay but the madness continues.
On the plus side, we need to get a cut of that for as long as we can. All the money in football is in this league.
beefy is right. it'll come to an end one day, but we need to reap the rewards while we can. it makes it even more imperative that we stay up again and increase the ground capacity. we need as much money behind us as we can get but we mustn't gamble like others have done. we still need to be run with self-sufficiency in mind
It's excellent that we are looking to become self sufficient at the same time as this news. If your riddled with debt, this news might be unsettling, the rangers news today seems to confirm that there might be heading towards a future where clubs are going to have to fold, they've for too long been seen as untouchable (if any other company was run in the same way they wouldnt be in business very long) but I think its changing particularly as the purse strings are getting tight at westminster. Luckily (again) we're in the best financial situation we've been in for decades, possibly ever. This money for us is positive, but others should be wary.
It all depends how people spend it if they have to try and keep up with an arms race in wages then its bad if clubs think humm time to slash debt then it is good. I think if clubs like Norwich and Swansea keep getting unpolished gems from the lower leagues and doing very well it may change the attitude of low and mid prem teams (big teams are long lost) but we can hope!
Your comment re big teams is excellent. I was reading somewhere yesterday, that Greeno has gone to Koo Pee Arr on £50K a week!!!! Remember Portsmouth anyone???? TBH - I would rather we were in the position we are in and having a wage limit - OK, I know we won't attract the top stars, but I loved watching players like Pilkington, both Bennetts, Tierney, so let's hope they're still happy to develop rtheir skills whilst wearing yellow and green next season!!!
I know this is a development of the game but I really had high hopes that the pure dependence on accruing money rather than improving the product for supporters was coming to an end but yesterdays announcement was an escalation.
I would like to see the Champions League replaced by a European Super League so all the "money teams" would bugger off taking SKY and their money with them, I feel it would be good for the game in this country and in the long run benefit the National team as it would allow more English players to come through as the foreign players would go where the money is not here.
.....and i don't suppose any more of this money will filter down to the lower leagues where it is needed and where, hopefully, future stars are nurtured. the haves will have more and the have nots can kiss their a**es.
I think the Championship will see a bigger deal in there next TV deal, think the Championship is growing pretty rapidly with massive teams in there. No where near the prem but I think a fair whack for the next deal they do, unfortunately League 1 and League 2 will suffer. They only time they will ever get a decent windfall is great young prospects being sold on to bigger clubs. I think the gaps between the leagues are getting bigger and financially Championship pulling away from League 1 now. Bit off topic but was nice to see Crewe get a decent sum for Nick Powell, too many times players have been stolen by big teams for pennies and come to nothing because they havn't been able to get any match experience.
