Off Topic There, their and they're

Discussion in 'The Premier League' started by Hoddle is a god, Jan 13, 2016.

  1. This site, as well as providing a fantastic platform for discussion on all things relating to our beloved game, is also a superb and extensive mine of information of a general educative nature. In respect of which, I would refer readers to my ground-breaking "Mouser Watch" threads.

In the spirit of fostering a greater education among our readers, I thought I would set out a simple guide on how to use "there," "their" and "they're," as some readers are continually confused as to which form to use. We are a broad and eclectic mix, on this site, and it must never be assumed that all of us left school with a basic understanding of the Queen's English, and I would not want any of you to feel stigmatised by your failings in the use of the correct grammar.

So, in that spirit, here is HIAG's helpful guide to correct usage.

There: "Where is the Spanner who doesn't understand the Queen's English? Oh, I see him, he's over there!"

Their: "Jesus! Have you seen how poorly the average Spanner uses the Queen's English? It's almost as though they delight in their ignorance!"

They're: "There is a certain type of poster who seems to glory in his ignorance of the rules of grammar; it's as though they're proud to be stupid!"

By all means, please use this educative thread to teach other rules of basic grammar.

All I would ask is that posters please refrain from overt wumage. Thank you.

One thing I've noticed about your posts when you go off on one of your flowery, camp rambles is that your use of commas is very poor. They are seemingly included at random. I've highlighted one sentence as an example.

It's an issue that many pre-teen kids have. They are encouraged to use commas and then end up overusing them. My 9 year old boy has the same grammatical affliction although he's a few steps ahead of you.

This thread confirms that you went to boarding school.

... as usual, the article suffers from incompleteness as well as a lack of fluidity ... you've neglectfully omitted:

Thurr - used by iindigenes of either side of the Pennines in preference to, or substitution of, any of the above <whistle>

  6. Unfortunately, you are incorrect, Stan. Not for the first time, either. My use of the comma, and, indeed, the semi-colon, is grammatically sound.

There are no hard or fast rules, in the use of the comma. Sentence structure, including the use of punctuation, is to be used in order to give coherence to the meaning behind the actual words.

I cannot be blamed for your ignorance, Stan.

This is starting out a bit like the s106 thread. Hopefully it won't end the same way!

"Why are you doing this Stan?!"

Not sure about this. Of the three commas you have highlighted, the first two are correct - they frame a subordinate clause and a comma is appropriate. The third one you can't say is wrong, although I personally wouldn't use it. And if it is being used, the "and" is superfluous. In my opinion.

They disrupt the flow of the sentence and are therefore unnecessary. I said his use of commas was very poor, like a 9 year old trying to impress his teacher. I think the 9 year old schoolkid is a good comparison as if there's one thing HIAG is desperate to do it's impress. I wouldn't be at all surprised if he turned out to have the mental age of a 9 year old. It would explain a lot including the scratch the surface understanding and knowledge of every subject he addresses as well as his obsession with his penis (and PISKIE's penis).

He definitely went/goes to boarding school though.

  14. Yes, it does bother me, Stan!

Is it too much to ask for people to be perfect?

I did, specifically, ask for people to refrain from wumming. Please, follow the rules.

More, importantly, though, HAIG, you did; go to boarding, school, didn't you?

It's wrote all over your posts.

HIAG, what I'd like you to answer, seeing as you're such a stickler for grammar and accuracy, is why haven't you been able to provide any evidence for your claim that I have 'edited embarrassing comments' on your Berahino wum **** up thread ?

I have made it very easy for you to identify where the evidence would be, had I of made any edits, but for some reason you seem to be completely bottling it.

I am only trying to help you Ro-land, for the sake of accuracy.
