    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2337828/Papiss-Cisse-refuse-wear-Newcastle-shirt-Wonga-sponsorship.html

The controversy surrounding Newcastle’s new shirt sponsor has taken a new twist with star striker Papiss Cisse set to refuse to wear the kit bearing Wonga.com.The Senegalese striker is a practicing Muslim and has protested to club officials on religious and ethical grounds about the pay-day loan company's deal.Under Sharia law, Muslims must not benefit from either lending money or receiving money from another person - meaning that interest is prohibited. Interest is not paid on Islamic bank accounts or added to mortgages.

Cisse's team-mates Cheick Tiote and Hatem Ben Arfa, who are also practicing Muslims, may also refuse to wear the strip.Newcastle are yet to work out a compromise with the player, report*The Mirror, though history points to a solution as they may follow the stance of former Tottenham and West Ham striker Freddie Kanoute. The Malian refused to wear the logo of gambling website 888.com on his Seville shirt some years ago. Kanoute instead wore an an unbranded top in Spain, although he agreed to wear the logo during training.Eventually he agreed to wear the shirt in exchange for being excused from any of the promotional duties the sponsorship entailed.*

Wonga, whose four-year deal takes over from Virgin Money at the start of next season, has already drawn fierce criticism from other quarters for the huge interest charged on 30-day loans.Reneged: Frederic Kanoute eventually agreed to wear the 888 sponsored shirts

Should a Newcastle fan accept a loan to buy a £50 club shirt, they would have to repay £71.92 after a month with a rate equivalent to 4,212 per cent per year.Earlier this week Bolton reversed their decision to enter into a sponsorship deal with QuickQuid after an agreement was met with opposition from fans.A statement on the club’s official website confirmed the agreement was no longer, with chairman Phil Gartside insisting: ‘We don’t want our commercial relationships to come between us and our community.

    Hahahahahahahaha :)

Oh dear, so they screwed up signing up a wong'un as a sponsor <whistle>

The Mags are yet to have a season without controversy since that fat knacker took over their club. He's almost as bad as the chicken farmers!

This! They should be either banned from trading or heavily regulated, because their market is aimed at one section of society....

The working class and the poor. I wonder how many of their loans are agreed to smackheads who need their next fix?

So basically the players mentioned are just hypocrits? they can wear the shirts in training but not in a match? sounds like Papiss is after a wage increase to me.

If a player does not want to benefit from supporting a gambling or loan company they should return a portion of their wages which would have been supplied by the sponsors. They could THEN refuse to wear the shirt.

bollocks!!!! He will wear the bastard when it comes to getting paid his wages. If he was a truly spiritual person who wouldn't be a footballer anyway he would be living a humble life with very few possessions and with a lack of concern for money. The muslims say you are going to helll for not believing what they believe and the christians say you are going to hell for not believing them. All these religious people seem very wealthy to me spreading their bullshit then acting in the opposite manner and saying if you don't believe in their 'loving' god(s) you will burn forever in agony for eternity because god loves you ffsake. Cissse is just part of that bullshit he will be first in the queue for his wages I bet so in conclusion, bollocks!!!

I would buy the shorts as it wouldn't have the sponsor written on them, I would attend every home game, some away games but I wouldn't buy the top, not a ****ing chance, I just hope we never go down that road

How has Fatty Ashley made so much money when he is so ****ing thick? It's called ****ing research! Deal is signed now, don't know what they're going to do. Should have explored all avenues before signing the deal.

Whilst I agree with the sentiment... Not so sure about thus as I'd someone comes in with £30m a year which goes towards the transfer kitty I'm not sure how I'd feel. I never use those companies personally and, whilst they're undoubtedly totally ignorant to the common man and his needs, the government must surely accept a large portion of blame for legalising this sort of thing. (Plus our wonderful Tory chancellor owns wonga I think!)

    30m a year? Check your figures mate, I think it's 6m a year.

For 30m a year I'd let Gloryhole sponsor my arsehole and I'd let people rummage around inside!

This day and age with contracts etc. Surely this kind of thing must be considered when they sign. You know, like I will refuse to wear a pink strip or frilly shorts and the like. A name on a shirt or a necklace with a cross, can I kiss the grass or do a kung foo kick into the crowd. The agents and advisors will have all this covered.
Funny how our muslims friends don't moan about the wages they get, that's for sure. (Or on a broader scale. Haters of our country claiming benefits)
