Of late a beautiful daughter Street Cry has gone a long way towards claiming the title as the best horse in the country. After taking out the G1 Queensland Oaks last May, she was sent off for a four month break. She's had just the three runs since her return. The first of these (video 1) was in the G2 Theo Marks over 1300m. Her second effort was in the G1 Epsom 1600, (video 2) and her final run came last Saturday in the premier WFA event in Australia, the Cox Plate. 2040m at the Valley. (Video 3, a link only to the vid) Winx is in the blue with white shoulder stripes. She has the inside barrier in the Cox Plate. ........... and winning the Cox Plate For more threads on the International Scene
She looks good. I know that it is usually just media speculation, but the rumour mill had it that Winx might be Royal Ascot bound next summer. As a lifelong sceptic, I will believe it when I see somebody official (i.e. trainer, owner, Ascot racecourse) announce it...
Agree, what a smashing racing mare. Cyc, that Hugh Bowman is one smoooooth jockey. Rode for a short while in the UK, for Mick Channon I believe?
Cyc, just been reading Terry Bailey, one of the chief stewards at Victoria had shots fired at his home. He's seemingly being trying to clean up the sport but some people are not best pleased with him doing so. Were the shots as a direct result of a man trying to improve the sport and ruffling some feathers involved in racing or was that a smoke screen for something altogether different. Seems a bit extreme.
STH, I'm sure that from time to time you heard the organised crime takes an interest in horse racing. Shooting up the home of the Victorian racing boss didn't come from the local ladies tea drinking cabal. Australia has had a long history of underworld involvement in the sport, links that have reached to government ministers and gentlemen of the cloth. People have been murdered, race rigging has occurred and corruption is always simmering just below the surface. This is not the first time Bailey has been threatened.
Yesterday at Randwick in the George Main Stakes over the metric mile, Winx faced five other horses in an attempt to run her back to back wins to eleven. Starting at 1-25, the daughter of Street Cry came against the crack galloper Hauraki. If she saluted, she's take her earnings to better than AU$7,000,000. She's in the Blue and White and settles second last behind Hauraki.
And as good as Winx is, I think Hartnell is the best horse in the country at the moment. On the same card as Winx, he won the 2000m Hill Stakes. Race 5, he's in the Godolphin Blue. http://m.racingnsw.com.au/FreeFields/Results.aspx?Key=2016Sep17,NSW,Royal Randwick
