In protest Wiki has pulled down the shutters for 24 hours, to try to put a stop to big business trying to pressure the US government into taking steps to shut down piracy. Good or bad?
Could be good for this place, any real debates that happen people will not have Wikipedia to back up their claims so we could get some real sources of information. Or it could be bad as most ****ers use it as their source so will not get in to a debate Pretty sure Obama & the like wont take any notice of wikipedia, not really sure of the ins & outs of the new laws they are passing in to piracy to be honest & how it effects joe public - other than the obvious download stuff & you will get in trouble!
they are forcing sites like wiki to provide isp's for any contributor to the site. Re percussions could be massive world wide. Would you comment on things on here if the threat of the c i a kicking your down became reality?
Mick already has a duty to do that for this site should the police get involved due to any didgy posts getting reported. Sure the CIA could find you without asking Wikipedia
Lobbyists from the music and film groups want the US government to take a stand. That stand reaches around the globe though. The ISP providers don't want a bar of it.
In the absence of Wikipedia today, I've drafted in 'a bloke down the pub' to back up my arguments and give them legitimacy.
The bill is slightly more intrusive than just attacking those who partake in video/ audio piracy, which is why Wiki are taking this stand. When I say slightly, I mean it is way off track and basically almost like dna profiling in terms of the internet...****ing yanks.
I say good but we need the bigger hitters like Google, Amazon, Facebook, Twitter etc to go black. I suspect the supporters of this SOPA and PIPA would be glad to see Wikipedia gone because it represents something they are firmly against, free information.
Schoolkids all over the world are ****ed for doing their homework. That is the beginning and end of Wiki's worth to the planet.
It is unlikely but I know something that would really make SOPA and PIPA supporters take notice. ISPs work together and organise a blackout. It would send a clear message and I would get a day off work as all of our work is web based.
