Doesn't excite me too much but he's been alright throughout his career other than in the England job which he should never have been given.

    England we are not.

I really hope not, he's not exciting nor does he promise safety and solidity. I know Terry sings his praises as a coach and no doubt he's right but he's hardly set the world on fire as a manager.

Why? His record at club level is not too bad at all. Are your assumptions solely based on his time as England manager?

Appointing that arsehole could bring about erectile dysfunction to many a Sunderland fan.

He did ok with Boro and well with Twente first time round. Since then he has failed at Wolfsburg, Forest, Twente (2nd spell) and now Derby. He may well be a good coach but it's been a while since he was last successful.

I would rather we looked elsewhere.

Inherited a mess at Derby and came within a whisker of promotion last season but they fell away this season because of small squad and injuries failing by one point to make the playoffs again cannot surely be classed as a failure to succeed.

He would be the steadying influence we need for a season or two.

Point taken but his Carveresque end to the season hardly fills me with confidence.

I've said this since day 1, and quite a few disagreed with me at the time.

Disagree. "did well" at Boro? He won them a trophy (more than either of us have done in a while), their first ever silverware (and only). He brought through some great youth prospects and played a team in the premiership entirely made up of local youth, since he left what has happened to Boro?

At twente he took an unfancied underdog team and won a league which has two or three great European teams in it - of which Twente was not one! That isn't doing well that's doing amazingly. His second spell wasn't successful but it wasn't (if I recall correctly) a failure he just didn't do as well.

He failed at England, though doesn't everyone? He failed at Wolfsburg and that was a genuine mistake. Forest he wasn't at for long and Derby wasn't really a failure, their points scores in the league for the four or five years before he came were 15-20 points less than in the two seasons he was there. If they still had him they'd probably be in and around the play offs again next year but the last couple of months have been abject.

    I'd love him at Newcastle.

Must be a decent coach because Fergie brought him in to Man Utd.

My view on him and his success is tempered by the fact that Steve Gibson was shovelling money in to the club. Boksic, Mendietta, Zenden, the Yak etc

My view on him at Derby was that he failed to get them promoted from a position where they should have walked it

My view on him at England was that he failed big time. That was a good squad and he didn't get us to the Euro tournament
