I have seen the clip and thought it was disgraceful. Many of the Welsh players seem generally happy enough living in England and receiving their enormous salaries paid by English teams and English fans. I do not think the England team would have behaved the same way were roles reversed.
Me neither. These Welsh players have been unbelievably unlikeable during this tournament. I hope Belgium hammer the cocky gits!
I had plans to follow Wales in the competition and had hoped they would progress but the attitude of the players (which I doubt reflects the views of the Welsh) has made me lose all interest in them. I suspect that many of these players are merely in the Welsh National team by virtue of parents and grandparents and are probably England born anyway. It reflects a horribly mean of spirit bunch.
I quite like it when you see people's true colours. I won't have to pretend to give a toss about them ever again. I was told by a cabby in Dublin once (not Fingy) that no matter what the Irish tell you to your face, the vast majority hate the English. A small sample, but I'd like to see some footage from a few Irish pubs last night. No need to ask about the Scots.
The Welsh team tried to have that clip buried before it got out. Someone got hold of it before they could though. The Welsh reason for behaving in this manner was ... ''We were just supporting the underdog.'' ( With hindsight they should've been supporting England then. ) Their excuse won't wash though. Especially in light of the comments they made in the lead up to their match with England. If there is one positive to be taken from this tournament, it's that the England team didn't rise to it and were very respectful after beating them. Having said that, I wish them well and hope they beat Belgium.
I wouldn't agree entirely ... I met four fellas from England on Saturday outside the stadium in Lens (one had a Watford jersey the others were non-descriptive). They started talking to my kid who had an Ireland jersey one and in spite of the few beers they had they couldn't have been nicer until my son tried to distance himself from the Rs and said he was an Arsenal fan! Joking aside I wished them well against France ... but I did say I'd prefer to have Rob Green in net instead of Hart. I've read some of the other comments posted and to be honest whatever about the bullishness before matches and most England fans have been very gracious to victors (if the victory was merited) and don't get blinded that most fans to their own sides short-comings (like most teams).
I always support the home nations in their matches so I'm very disappointed, but not totally surprised, to see that this is not reciprocated. I'd like to say that I now hope the Welsh lose their next match but some instinct, something innate inside me, will ensure I still support them. I wish they had the same instincts. Very sad.
Just saying ....I support both teams, I was not jumping about after Iceland...I was more dead from the scalp downwards at the horror of it all but you should be in my shoes at work when Wales lose at Rugby. The delight of the England whitewash in comparison to the Welsh blackwash recently was quite similar "So cocky after the World Cup ...who are the World beaters now!"...was my favourite remark. (and no-I wasn't cocky after our World Cup journey either...) Certain people regardless like to sledge... there will be "remarks" along the same lines about Wales after they go out to Belgium this weekend
From first hand experience Stan a lot of Irish are ABE (Anyone But England), probably doing the lads on here a disservice, but can't remember the year but it was when Portugal knocked England out of the Euro's, 2004 maybe, I was watching the game in the golf club with 30 others and when Portugal scored the roof was lifted off the place, it was as if Ireland had scored. One or two did say sorry but they couldn't help themselves as they were delighted that England had lost........ Maybe things have changed a bit over the years but I'm sure a large number of the population were pleased about Iceland...... BTW I think we should adopt the Icelandic Haka......
http://www.rte.ie/news/2016/0629/798904-paris-france-euro-2016/ But the Irish get a medal for great sportsmanship
Had a pre tourney bet on Belgium and Italy (purely because I thought their odds were bigger than they should be). I will hopefully be posting a similar video of me going mental, after Belgium have destroyed the arrogant maggots !
I've always thought this about the Irish, but having met a lot of the great Irish lads on here I thought it may have changed. Reading these posts, sadly it seems I may have been right all along.
So many Irish fans support English club teams means it's slightly different to the jocks. They wouldn't want us to win it but United fans for example wouldn't have been cheering to see Rooney and smalling look like pub players, and the premiership shown up for the polished turd it might actually be.
Probaby is right Tramore. All I can say is, whatever reasons the Welsh or Scotch have to dislike the English, we have justifiable historical reasons. The truth is, we might dislike the Englsih national team for the fans no surrender to the IRA chants. When they sing no surrender to the UDA, we will join in. The Northern troubles were a 2 way street and a lot of people conveniently forget that. People in Ireland love their English club football but the right wing no surrender brigade make it hard to like the national team. That is the truth. Drop the no surrender stuff and you will find a lot more Irish will genuinely be cheering England.
As posted on the match thread, I support the home nations in tournaments (especially as I've had no Welsh interest ever - born in 62). I suspect (and hope) the team's reaction was the result of the pre match comments, that both teams engaged in btw and was merely continuation of the 'banter'. These are highly competitive people and it has continued to ensure tension and interest one way or another. Support the Welsh or not, I believe the majority would have followed England and Ireland if the roles were reversed. I cannot claim the same to be true about rugby though.
