A West Yorkshire butcher is offering free Christmas dinners to people struggling with delays to Universal Credit payments.

David Jones, who runs a butcher's shop in Dewsbury, said claimants in the local area who won't receive their payments before Christmas will get a hamper with a turkey crown, pigs in blankets and a pork pie.

"It's been a difficult period because we have got some people that are desperate," he told Sky News.

"I could just see this was causing people real hardship.

"When I realised there could be a delay at Christmas, I asked myself, how will these families eat?"

The tweet received 21,000 likes and was retweeted nearly 7,000 times, with responses from people affected by late payments still coming in.

Pretty much guess he will go bust if this is all coming out of his own pocket, and how will he gauge genuine cases and what parameters on location has he put in place!

I deal with universal Credit claims in some form most days and trust me it's a terrible system. It's broken for the most vulnerable group's...

Yeah lets give addicts their benefits in 12 monthly instalments. Thats 12 days of drug binges sorted...what about the other 353? Crime.

There's so much wrong with it, that's just one example.

Exactly! Break it down into 365 daily installments, and they can get their heroin every day! Everyone's a winner!

Universal credit isn't a bad idea or system. It's the delay in getting it that's the problem.

The only problem I have with these kind of things is that consecutive govts made people idle and reliable on benefits. To then yank them away

That said I do think the whole food bank stuff is way over stated.

Dont get me wrong there are individuals in dire states but it's not the problem it's made to be. In my experience for every one person who genuinely needs it there are others who take the piss and deny responsibility

The world’s sixth richest economy, and people are relying on food banks; meanwhile, I step over people sleeping under bridges on my way in to work every day. Mental health beds are at an all time low, community services have all had their funding slashed, the Old Bill won’t use section 136 of the Mental Health Act anymore to get vulnerable people off the streets, because they know they’ll be left holding them in the cells due to lack of NHS resources.

The reason is as plain as the nose on your face - ****ing Tory bastards. ****s. Utter ****s.

And then on Christmas Day you’ll see photos of Theresa May going to church. While the streets fill with rough sleepers. Happy ****ing Christmas. ****s.

Tell that to the people sleeping under the railway bridges in Finsbury Park. And every other station in London.

You’ve got your ****ing head up your arse if you can’t see how this government has thrown the most vulnerable members of society to the wolves.

Yup, its getting the same with homelessness now.
Especially in Milton Keynes! There has been a ridiculous rise in the number of homeless people in MK in the last 5 years, especially in the centre of the city, every underpass you see now in CMK has at least one guy sleeping rough under it.
Thing is though, there are numerous homeless shelters, homeless charity centres and a YMCA in CMK, so there really is no reason for these people to be sleeping rough, UNLESS......

Shelters will only turn someone away if they are drunk or are using (drugs). These people need to get help with their sobriety before the shelters will take them in.

Sorry mate but whilst I agree with some of your points above, things are never as they appear when you "unpick" them

Yeah sure there are soldiers, for example, who simply need help to adjust back to civvie life and don't get the help they deserve but there are also people who think the world owes them

I know it's one example but I had a squatter in my property who was a young 21 year old police told me was down on his luck. I let him stay there rent free and the ****er not only wrecked the place but shat in the bath and was pissing in bottles as he couldn't be arsed to go to the bog next to his room.

Even got him a job which he quit and always had money for weed. Turns out he was from an affluent family and his mum kicked him out as he was a ****. Saw him sleeping in a car recently but **** him

Oh the Tories have ****ed it up, for sure.
Austerity helps no one, it is flawed as a concept. If people have less money, they spend less money, less spending = less growth = ****ter economy.
It is not rocket science. There are a few good things that the Tories have done ,like the child cap on benefits. I was sick of seeing these sluts decide that their career was going to be as a kid factory. They **** out kid after kid, and their benefits go up and up, and they do a piss poor job of raising them, inevitably.

But then there is **** like the bedroom tax <doh>

I worked in a few projects working with drug users, rough sleepers etc and overall my personal conclusion was most had options but couldn't be arsed.

Them there was some who genuinely needed support

A lot of homeless people will have dogs, for two reasons, company and a source of income. If the homeless shelters don't accept dogs, then they need to find around 17.50 per day from begging/donations to get off the street for the night.

I recently helped a 17 year old get a job washing dishes in a restaurant. He comes from a family where the old man would hammer the wife and kids. His first wage he went and got a haircut etc and gave money to his mum. I would literally give him a wage out of my own pocket if I could because the guy is really trying

Here's the thing though he is the 8th person in that role. 5 of the other 7 got paid, got high and didn't return

I agree 100%. It's the Labour culture, they give people too much and it got to the point it was pointless working with them because they make it so easy not to.

The lazy bastards and something for nothing brigade are ruining this country. Not the Conservatives.
