Seems LVG doesn't actually decide who we sign. Instead of using a manager with years of experience, the final say on who we sign is down to Woodward, whose qualifications include being an ex banker, ex accountant, and a yes man to the Glaziers http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/fo...ester-United-sign-transfer-window-closes.html
You really dissapointeded me with this one bonnet, for one it`s a Mail article, for two it is no different to any other club (including ours under SAF). The manager gives a list of his prefered players in each position and the cheif exec makes contact with the clubs of thos players, if the clubs come to an agreement on price then the manager (LVG/SAF) may then get involved to convince the player it is a good move for him. It has been this way for decades. Some good pics of the players training though, they were all smiling, much like Pool under Dalgliesh. Must have some good sponsership deals ]
I always assumed you were a Mouser who could understand what he read. LVG has said he gives a list of his prefered players to the club (it is the chief exec`s job to chase them) and he has also told the players who don`t fit that they are free to find another club but he will not force them out (leaving them the chance to prove him wrong)
I was merely showing you it wasn't just a Daily Fail story. As for its content, VG would never have taken the job at Utd if he had to let the club vice chairman identify and sign his own choice in players. Anyone who believes otherwise must be off their heads Diego.
Maybe he's not a Fergie after all. SAF wouldn't have been dictated too by a clueless prat like Woodward.
Exactly that Valleygraduate. SAF & David Gill worked together as a very successful team. None of this last minute panic buying for them, they had all their signings done and dusted way before deadline day. The only last minute one that I can recall was Berbatov, and that was down to Daniel Levy playing hardball, but Gill worked his magic anyway.
I don't understand what the controversy is here. The manager recommends players and the CEO negotiates with the players' clubs. That's the same structure as at any other top flight club. Managers don't have the time to be spending hours on the phone, on planes and in boardrooms negotiating wages and image rights (which they have no authority over). The fact that United's chief negotiator seems to be a rank amateur is another story. It's media spin on a perfectly normal quote from a manager which has been lapped up by the dramatic United fans and the ABUs. The more interesting part of the interview yesterday was LVG's pragmatic approach to what needs to be done at United. Stage 1 to finish in the top four, stage 2 to win the PL, stage 3 to win the CL. Given his track record at other clubs I think given time he will achieve stages 1 and 2. Stage 3 depends on a lot of external factors including luck.
He worked his magic by breaking the British transfer record. Have a look at the signings Gill and Fergie made in their last 3 years in charge. United are struggling to give some of them away! Fergie was a genius and Gill a very good CEO but it's naive to pretend they always got it right. For a start they overlooked a lightweight midfield for about 4 years!
Shteve, I don't have a problem with LVG, none at all. I just find Woodward totally useless at his job. His record to date is abysmal, and I wonder how we can progress with a Glazier yes man in charge. Hopefully, he will sort things out, but he is running out of time. I just hope he proves me wrong, but I don't have any confidence in him whatsoever
Actually when you think about it, he can only sign those suggested to him. Fellaini Mata Shaw Herrera Rojo Di Maria. Woodward has provided the players. Look at Di Maria, a superb signing, but it won't mean a damn thing unless the defence and centre of midfield is sorted. I think the full judgement on Woodward should wait until this time Tuesday morning.
According to several papers, we might no be able to play Rojo because of third party ownership, so whose fault is that?
Then that must come down to the clubs legal team for not going through the relevant paper work and informing Woodward and LVG of any potential problems.
I seem to be in a minority, but I just don't trust Wooward at all. he might have been fine getting the sponsorship deals, but buying players is clearly not his forte. If I am wrong, I will take it all back. Hopefully I am wrong, but i doubt it
You're not in a minority, no one rates Woodward. You seem to think though that he chooses which players United should be trying to sign. That's just plain wrong.
That tapping up for Berbatov was pretty magic. And the way Tottenham mysteriously dropped their complaint suddenly..
