Great result that means the Town are staying up. Mick McCarthy Ipswich Town Legend We can now laugh at Narwich as they scrap to avoid the drop The Adnams tastes sweet tonight
Great win, but still we're only 5 points off the relegation zone, it's bloody mental this league!! Think we should be safe but we just don't seem able to pull away!!
We can't do anything about what other teams do just so long as we keep picking up the points we will be fine It will take some real freakish results now to deny us safety!
Mick took over at the start of November...... http://www.twtd.co.uk/league-tables...Nov-01/todate:2013-Jun-01/type:home-and-away/ if only we had got rid of jewell in September.
Yes, great stats Hoppers.... if only MM had been brought in earlier. Credit where its due and Warky sang MM's praises more than most on here and he has been proved right....but we can really start to dream about next season now! What I find fascinating is that 3 of the top 6 promotion fighting clubs are in the bottom 5 on Form...hmmm...crazy league this year! With McGold & Taylor both back, we shall have a decent attack oince more...I still mourn the passing of DJ tho...goodness what a differebnce he made in his short spell...a real buzz bout the player. Both Chops and N'Daw need to be shown......the Door! Tho the latter does have physical presence...but we aint strived all this season to keep gifting the damn ball to the opposition all the time! One elated Townie over the moon fan...in France on gardening leave, as it happens.
Hey ptc..whats up? we just pulled up to 13th....we will be fine now. I always said a top 12 position beckons...and if we snatch another couple points, we will be in top 10. We have admittedly ridden our luck...but about time too as many results earlier in season got away from us.
This season is MENTAL! We're 13th but mathematically anyone from 9th down could go down. #cliffhanger.
We may only be 5 points from safety, but i have worked out that because teams have to play each other below us and not both teams can get the points that we are safe now. Next goal is to get a top 10 finish for this season! well done Mick and the boys.
Cheers Guru. I couldn't be arsed to do that, but I'm pleased you did! We deserve to stay up on the strength of Cresswell's goal last night!!!
I hope so but after before every game you think if we win this one we'll be safe but everyone else just keeps winning!! Have to say the standard of this league is very poor this season, even Cardiff I don't think are that great a side. I'd be surprised if any of the teams that go up stay up next season. I don't think Mick is a lucky manager its how he sets the team up to work hard and be organised solid first and foremost. You look at some of the performances when we were under Jewell and we were dominating teams having alot of chances always failing to convert then making a mistake at the other end and the flood gates opening, perhaps you could say we were unlucky, but it was how we were set up and the mentality of the set up. More often than not under Mick we are on the back foot but the opposition rarely looks like scoring and we just pick up the odd goal. It's actually similar to how we played under Keane except Mick is far better at it and knows how to organise a team but more importantly he's instilled a great team spirit which we haven't really seen I don't think since the Burley days, this is his biggest strength his man management. This is one of the worse Ipswich teams I've seen with the ball but I have never seen an Ipswich team so competant defensively by a long long way!! Interesting and incredible fact we have now conceded just 6 goals in our last 14 games, having let in 51 in the previous 29!!!
I put this on twtd last night; If Mick had been here since the start of the season we would be on 70 points, 4th place, that is if he had got his average of points per game since he took over. But in all likelihood we may well have been better placed from the off and been challenging for automatic promotion rather than playing it a bit safe and trying to catch everyone else up.! What I was trying to say that since Mick came in we have taken 1.63 points per game, if we had taken that since day one we would be comfortably in the play off picture on 70 points. Now taking into account we had given Cardiff a 21 point start up to Micks arrival he clearly played to get enough points just to keep us in the Championship. If we had been in touch, ie. taken 1.63 points per game for those first 13 games we would have been on 21 and approx. in 7th place. Mick would probably have been more "open" in some of our games since. I truly think that a number of those draws would have been converted into wins (& losses) but net we probably would be a good handful of points better of. Thus instead of being 1.63 points per game it may have been more like 1.70 points per game putting us on 73 ish points, close to auto promotion to the promised land...But already in a play off place.! (hope this makes sense.!)
Wow! I was presenting at an event last night and didn't leave till midnight. I've only just found out we won 3-0! ****! Another clean sheet and another win. Everything seems to have clicked and if we can keep this going we'll be promoted next season. Looking forward to see what happens over the summer. There is a good argument to keep this entire squad together.
Very good point Hoppers and I think it's fair to say that we have certainly turned a corner since MM's arrival Personally this talk of promotion this season if MM were here all year is a lot of hot air (although pleasant reading) as I doubt MM would have joined us at any other point as the owner backing his managers has been stated as a selling point.. Also I think MM probably more options than us. As for teams performance(s), as we all know this league is bonkers so it's all relative (in terms of results) and Mick was the right man at the right time for the right club. I think his ability to drag the club from it's knees by the scruff of the neck is what has made him so successful, had he come in at a different time, who knows it could have worked out differently - for better or worse I will hold my hands up and say that I was dubious about the appointment but MM has done everything he can to get us competitive and has achieved such a lot in a short space of time so for that I think we will be forever grateful to him as well as incredibly optimistic about what he can go on and achieve with us with him at the helm I hate to admit to this... (Agreeing with JWM ) but MM & ITFC are a match made in heaven right now and long may it continue
On Hoppers' point, it's hard to say and I don't think you could predict how the players and results would have been in a different scenario. MM has pulled off a miracle and thoroughly deserves his £2m. Now let's offer him a £2m bonus to take us up.
I realise this is purely hypothetical & I take KOPRs point about Mick's availability...But even if we had changed during the international break during September (7th), we would more than likely been in a playoff berth.. In that 9 game period we only took 2 points.!
If we're going to say its mathematically possible for us to go down, it's still possible for us to get into the play-offs! Not gonna happen but its another way to demonstrate how crazy this league is. I'm hoping for a top 12 finish which should give us the platform to really push on next year. Wherever we finish, McCarthy has done an incredible job.
I'll be at Hillsborough Saturday. Hopefully it might even be sunny. If we could win and catapult into the top half I'm sure not one of us would have bet on that happening earlier in the season.
If you look at the table you will notice that we have a 6 point gap on Huddersfield due to our superior GD (never thought we could have said that!).
Hope you have a good day Hampy, we will be expecting a match reprto from you... I am taking my son & his mate to Col Utd they have a massive game v The Shrews, my son has a bit of a soft spot for Shrewsbury, no idea why.! We will be in the away end..
